Okay, maybe it's not coming up. Maybe it's not tomorrow. Maybe it's not next year. Maybe it won't happen this decade, but someday, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals will face Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the playoffs again.
There is no rule that says this must happen. There is no league policy forcing superstars to play each other; in fact it hasn't happened in decades. There is no law that says that the matchup all the fans wanted to see has to happen again. There is no law of nature that says that crushing disappointments following stellar efforts must be rewarded with second chances.
They say in life there are no second chances. They say opportunity only knocks once. They say a lot of things. To be a Caps fan right now is to believe that the Capitals will one day again face the Penguins in the playoffs and that, when they do, they will have spent every intervening moment training, studying, drilling, preparing and building their team for the sole purpose of defeating Sidney Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins.
Crosby walked through the crease at will during this series. Next time, the Caps will be ready. Malkin and Crosby each brought their best physical play against a Caps defense that has focused all year on skillful transitions and long outlet passes. Next time the Caps will be ready. The Penguins looked beatable for six games and then finally took advantage of a couple rookie mistakes by the Caps' wunderkind goaltender. Next time...
Simeon Varlamov posted amazing numbers throughout his NHL season, but his total regular season experience is less than half of his playoff experience. He has a strong winning record in both, but where it counts, in game sevens, he is only 1-1. Perhaps the pressure of the spotlight on a truly global stage was too much, even for a goalie who has kept Russian teams in international competitions. Perhaps next year, Varlamov will start five regular season games against the Penguins and get to know their tricks. Perhaps he will get used to them enough to keep up when they elevate their play and the pressure rises.
The Caps defense is full of talented playmakers who play through careful positioning to cut down potential shooting angles. Last night, in game seven, Coach Bruce Boudreau benched superstar and Norris Trophy nominee Mike Green. Instead, in the game's final minutes, Boudreau played John Erskine. Erskine was sometimes a healthy scratch this season, because in regular season games his toughness and determination to clear the crease was considered a luxury. In the playoffs, Boudreau realized too late, it was the missing ingredient. Green is usually tough, but wasn't getting it done last night. Next time, perhaps all the Caps players will be comfortable backchecking aggressively in front of their own crease.
Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.
Last night, Verizon Center gave the Caps a standing ovation after they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The crowd chanted MVP in honor of Ovechkin's great season, supporting him over Malkin or Detroit's Pavol Datsyuk for the NHL's Hart Trophy. A town that has gone on its biggest band-sleigh-ride since 1998 stood strong in support of a club that has laid it on the line all season. But at the back of all that optimism and good cheer, everyone is thinking about how we are going to beat those Penguins next time. When we do, it will be even sweeter.

good job caps. at least you didn't lose to the rangers or flyers. yuck!
OK. Let's pat em on the backs for the season but NOT let em off the hook for this massive CHOKE. Starting with Mike (Minus 3)Green. If you aren't going to score goals in the playoffs you at least have to play D. PICK UP A MAN. STAY AT HOME. Keep Crosby out of the crease. SOMETHING. He was god awful last night.
Thank you for not including the obligatory lame comment about how it's so great that after a series they shake hands.
because it's not great? or talking about it is an obvious sign of one of those dreaded bandwagon fans? i think it's one of the coolest traditions in all of American professional sports.
some things will never change. wooooooo
