Former Murky Owner to Open Chinatown Coffee Company

2009_0520_coffee.jpg Former Murky Coffee owner Nick Cho revealed on Don Rockwell this morning that he will be opening his new coffee shop, Chinatown Coffee Company, sometime in June. Cho also said that Wrecking Ball Coffee roasting company, which DCist previously reported would go into the space at 5th and H Streets NW, is actually "a separate venture." And for anyone who had a favorite Arlington Murky barista, Cho says he will employing a number of them in the new Chinatown storefront. Photo by erin_m

Junkpunching comes to Chinatown! Between that and the Hooters, what else do you need?

It took 8 minutes to mention junkpunching? And Monkey hasn't even chimed in yet? For shame, commenters, for shame.

I'm all of a sudden jonesing for a double shot over ice...

I'll add the milk later thank you

Where the hell is Monkey? Should we call someone to check on him?

中华字经-海外学中文的捷径 - which loosely translates to "punch you in the junk" and has an alternate meaning of "pay tax is bad".

we'll make sure to send Flyers fans in there asking for iced espresso...

So instead of junkpunching, he's just going to wreck my balls? This is exactly why I switched to chicory.

Now if you'll excuse me, my microwaved johnnycake is ready.

That's my picture! Which is cool and all, except, um, you didn't link back to it. Or offer credit. Which isn't cool.

Hey erin, not intentional, just had to use the thumbnail size so there literally wasn't space for a caption. I added a credit at the end of the post.

:) Aww, no worries. I just wanted the odd person who clicked back through to flickr to know it was a shot from Peregrine, the awesome Murky replacement on the hill.

There's already junkpunching in Chinatown. The Krav Maga training center on H Street teaches all kinds of junk punches and junk kicks.

Wow, this is the best example of the sunk cost fallacy I've ever seen. 2 closed coffee shops by the same owner and yet someone keeps throwing money at it.

Soon I am going to China"Block" with my giant pitcher full of ice, with a splash of honey, and ask them to put some shots of expresso in it. Sweet!

What's that? Danger to my life? Possible coffee artist outrage? Destroyed nuts and no hope of collecting taxes? I just wanted an iced-mocha-honey-chino, I'm confused...

I'm trying to cut down on my coffee. Mr. Coffee Jitters
keeps coming around and messing with my lower intestine.
Me thinks it may be Sea Monkeys and Tapeworms on Spring Break. But then again, it may be wormhole full of love.

Sure there's no CHUDs in your lower GI tract? Maybe!

I may be a CHUD spawner, yes, but alas, no. I do loves the chocolatey rich taste of a good cup of joe though. Too much and I'm up all night long watching ADULT SWIM til the morning dew.

It's good to know that both our Council members and shopkeepers can operate on a tax free basis. Way to go DC ... I sure am "glad" I pay my taxes.

Peregrine FTW...(except on weekends)

Wrecking Ball Coffee?? More like, "I'm gonna wreck your balls!"

Hey-o! [rimshot]

I didn't even know the Murky Clarendon location closed until just reading this. After it left Capitol Hill and Peregrine showed up, I hadn't thought twice about Murky. I loved their coffee and all, but yeah Peregrine is great. I'm moving out of the area soon and I'm going to miss that place.

Are you allowed to open another business in the District if you owe back taxes? I know you're allowed to be a city councilman and eat babies, but I would think that DCRA could put a lien on his future businesses, right?

This does sound suspicious. If the Marion Barry back taxes debacle has taught us anything, it's that you can't pay off your tax debt using dead babies. And with all proceeds from his monkey poop coffee business going to fund Sendero Luminoso operations in Peru, I don't see how he's going to turn a profit on this one.

Well, if you get someone else to put the business in their name, you can open it. Not that I'm saying that he did. But it's a very easy way around it.

Do we get to start a betting pool on how long until it closes for failure to pay taxes?
