Oh, Mei Xiang, you absolute heartbreaker. Staff at Smithsonian's National Zoo confirmed late yesterday their adult female giant panda is in fact not pregnant, and was instead experiencing another one of her pseudopregnancies. This also happened last summer. And the summer before that.
The Zoo's Panda House has been closed for several weeks while National Zoo scientists monitored Mei Xiang's hormone levels and behavior and conducted ultrasound exams in order to determine if she was pregnant. Based on her hormone cycle and the fact that no fetus has been observed, Zoo officials have gone ahead and called this another pseudopregnancy, marking the fifth such experience for Mei Xiang. She gave birth to Tai Shan, her only cub, in 2005.
So it's another sad day for panda lovers in Washington. After HBO canceled Screen on the Green, we had really been pinning our hopes for an awesome summer on the possibility of a brand new little baby panda to obsess over. Instead, we'll once again have to suffer through August without a new star on the panda cam. So sad.
The Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat will reopen today at 10 a.m.

And Now, 10-20 Inches

I'm psychic! Or does this fall under the blatantly obvious category?
Pandas are the Bruce Springsteen of the zoo. And I'm not a Springsteen fan.
A girl needs to be wined and dined. This AI stuff obviously ain't doing it for her.
Wait, they're using computers to get her pregnant?!
On the bright side, DC's finally getting a real authentic diner minus all the pretentious chichi.
I'll take that over some MILFy panda any day. Maybe!
Now THAT is exciting stuff!
Totally. Not that I will ever to be able to get there in my car-less vagabond ways.
The diner looks like a Worcester semi-streamline.
The guy who lives next to me retired as a chef from Hot Shoppes after some 47 years. His fried chicken smells awesome.
OMG, Monkey that's gorgeous! Thanks for the heads up!
UPDATE: the diner has arrived! And of course, the DCRA inspector refused to approve the foundation, so putting it there will be illegal! Capital City Diner has A LOT to learn about paying kickbacks.
So if they can't place the diner on the foundation, what do they do with it in the meantime? Dump it in the Anacostia and retrieve it later?
Maybe the zoo will donate the turkey baster to the new diner, which will be named Butterstick Chrome.
In other crap news, the 'Zards got shafted in the draft lottery.
Was an actual male panda used for the breeding or was a turkey baster the culprit? Andy panda must a used a johnny.
Ain't nuttin finer than havin' a down home diner.
