Council member Marion Barry must have felt pretty confidently that he'd taken the temperature in Ward 8 on the issue of gay marriage. Barry, as you know, cited his constituents when he voted against recognizing same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions. Oh, but fickle democracy! Mercurial, bicurious base! How might Barry have known that left to their own affairs, Ward 8 Democrats would vote nearly 2 to 1 for teh ghey! The Washington Post reports that the meeting saw a 21 to 11 vote supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage in the District. The article also notes that opponents of same-sex marriage are appealing for a direct referendum on gay marriage. A Prop 8 for Ward 8? Good god almighty, let's hope not.

Both the news from Ward 8 and your account of it brought a smile to my face tonight. Hysterical.
Well, he was for it before he was against it.
thanks, kriston, for summarizing this so well.
You can bash Barry all you want, but at least when he was Mayor, he told people where he was going. When DC was buried in a blizzard, you knew Barry was in Miami Beach monitoring the situation closely. If it was Friday night, you knew Barry was either at Joanna's or Camelot or Royal Palace. Fenty? For all we know, he's off to Camino to get his ass cloned. it's beyond the Outer Rim. I'd say about twelve parsecs outside the Rishi Maze, toward the south. It should be easy to find, even for those droids in your archive. These Kaminoans keep to themselves. They're cloners. Damned good ones, too. Maybe they'll give him back his hair.
I like how in the article right next to it, they report on Utah representative Jason Chaffetz and how he is fronting the effort for the House of Reps to overturn the DC council's decision. In it he stated that it was fair and appropriate that someone like him should apply Utah values in making choices for the people of the district.
I'm glad he feels so privileged to force his non-constituents to live their lives under his beliefs...Go back to Utah junior rep.....
"Hey you, get that steel drum out of the uh, mayor's office."
FYI, that was a response to Monkey's comment. Goddamnit DCist.
What??? Marion Barry was ignorantly talking out his ass??? I am totally, utterly shocked and appalled.
Marion Barry and all of his bigoted, zealot, self-loathing, miserable ministers from PG County are just hatin' because those bitches are on the D-L. Werd.
lol. Nice one. Except if it was Girls Rock it would have been,
"We love everybody"*
Good catch.
Can the rest of us vote on whether or not we want to kick Ward 8 out of DC? And maybe build a fence/moat around it?
lolwtfbbq:
"Can the rest of us vote on whether or not we want to kick Ward 8 out of DC? And maybe build a fence/moat around it?"
Haha we don't need a fence we have a moat already, Ward 8 is all on the other side of the Anacostia river, so just cut off the Green line at Navy Yard and your set ;-)
I'm sure PG county wouldn't mind having that area, they already get all the criminals fleeing the Southern Ave border line anyway.
Ummmm has anyone ever thought that maybe Barry speaks for himself and not necessarily Ward 8.
There is a significant Black gay & lesbian population in DC, a number of whom are poor and live in Barryville.
I agree.
A "city wide" vote on this issue (as the WAPO article echoes) would TRULY tear the city apart. Given that African Americans are the marjority in this city, it is likely that a vote would swing in whatever decision that community chose; leaving anyone else out of the equation. That is why it is so essential that when it comes to people's rights, the majority not be given absolute power over the minority... I like that the article mentioned how if slave owners had been able to vote on freeing the slaves, it might have never come or taken decades longer. A minority can never get equal protection if the majority opposes it; so some type of intervention will always be needed. Having resided in Ward 8 for a few months, I am delighted that they have spoken out on this issue and shown support that calls into serious doubt Mr. Barry's assertions. With more outreach efforts to this population of Ward 8 and other predominately black neighborhoods, I think that a common ground can be achieved that is favorable to all!
I think it's cowardly that Barry didn't even show up; and I don't buy for a second that he had a doctor's appointment... that man uses his health as an excuse for anything he doesn't want to do... and I think HE KNEW the vote would not swing in his favor!!! Someone needs to hold this man accountable for his actions, ill health or not!
After attending Ward 5's Democratic meeting tonight, I am shocked that Ward 8 was able to be so steadfast and numerous in it's compassion and yet Ward 5 could not even run a civilized discussion of the real issues... and worse, our "straw poll" MUST be rendered invalid as one question was irrelevant (it was asking about the measure the council already approved) and the other was misleading at best--plus, one question wasn't even placed on the ballot! Sad affairs for Ward 5 tonight...
