Really, Now, This Seems Like A Cry For Help

Someone get the Washington Nationals a team of copy editors, stat.

Okay, leaving off an extra "n" on Jordan Zimmermann's bat was forgivable, since it was likely a manufacturing error. But you'd think that after the "Natinals" debacle, the Nats would try to be a little more careful, double and triple-checking everything going out the door.

Alas, no. D.C. Sports Bog provides the damning evidence this morning -- seen above -- that the Nationals' proclivity for orthographical sins is continuing, unabated. Honestly, we're a little shocked that the team would misspell Teddy's last name, considering that he's probably one of the few things at the ballpark that people actually look forward to watching these days. That's no way to treat your stars, guys.

With Dan Steinberg's mnemonic advice though, we're sure that Nats management will remember how to spell Roosevelt much better next time. Quoth the Bogger: "It's just like the crowd at most D.C. sporting events--twice as many O's as you think there should be."

At first, I though maybe that right hand bobbed along with the head. Then, I RTFA.

Geez, as if the Nats weren't embarrassing enough already...

I'd understand if they skimped on copy editors in favor of pitching, but...

Unless they've had an outbreak of plague over on the Bog, I think you mean "mnemonic" . . .

Daaaag! Dat's embarrassing. Dey kan't even spell a presidents name right.

"Rossevelt" is embarrassing but "pneumonic advice" is pretty hilarious too as a stand-in for "mnemonic device". We all make these mistakes.

Nate and gerhardj: I always forget that advice about glass houses. How's that go again?

Thanks for noticing that I'm typing way too fast this morning.

Speak softly and carry a big stick ... FDR.

Speak softly and carry a big fish stick...Rossevelt there, fixed it for you...

Sadly, I think we've reached the point where such embarrassments are no longer newsworthy. It's time Major League Baseball start thinking about a system a la the English Premier League whereby the worst teams are relegated to playing in lesser leagues.

Good luck convincing any American sports owner that relegation is a good idea. That train sailed about a century ago.

Agreed. Not that I expect anyone ever to have a serious discussion on relegation, it would at least keep things interesting for the 50 percent of MLB teams that are out of contention by August.

The franchise system by which teams in the major professional leagues operate, and the organizational structures of the leagues themselves, makes relegation impossible in the US.

Right... again, not a serious suggestion, and it's impossible, as you mentioned, because of the ownership structure. Still, you can't help but wonder how many AAA teams out there could compete as well as the Nats have this year. And they might even spell their owns names correctly on their jerseys.

if they won't let him win, the least they could do is spell the guy's name right!

I'm not at all surprised by this--in fact, I'm more surprised that anyone caught the mistake at all! I see tons of spelling errors (obvious ones) on DC Government sites and forms, and other news sites. Hell just this morning I was reading on the Post (I think?) about a giant sei whale that washed up on shore in Delaware.

Is it just me or does anyone else find the "City" and "State" fields on DC Government forms to be...ahh, how do you say...errrr...absurd?

I'll give them a pass on that one - they are just conforming to USPS standardization.

Wait . . . where's the spelling error in that sentence?

What an insult to the memory of President Rosenfelder.
