Good morning, D.C. It was an incredibly violent night in the District, as a rash of gunfire rang out in multiple incidents in Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights and other neighborhoods. In the Adams Morgan shooting, the Post reports that two plain-clothes officers and a uniformed lieutenant interrupted an armed robbery near the Marie H. Reed Learning Center between Kalorama and Champlain Streets NW. The perpetrator then opened fire, hitting one officer in the back and the other in the leg. In the exchange, the suspect was killed.
Meanwhile, Ward One Councilman Jim Graham reported from the scene of another "gang-related" shooting on the 3000 block of 14th Street NW, incredibly close to the Columbia Heights Metro station. A 19-year-old male was killed in the attack, which, according to Graham, occurred with "at least three police officers were right there." The shots, fired around 11 p.m., sent pedestrians running who were out for a walk in the area. Of course, this is hardly the first time that bullets have been spread in the area, but rarely are the incidents occurring so close to the neighborhood's new development -- here's hoping that the various cameras in the area caught something identifiable.
Finally, the Post also has a roundup of three other shootings -- spanning from the 200 block of Wayne Place SE, where two teens were shot in a dispute after a baseball game, to individuals found with gunshot wounds both at 55th and Blaine Streets NE and on the 300 block of W Street NE.

I know it's in the plans for Champlain Street to be reopened behind Marie Reed, which I think will go a long way to cleaning up that area. Right now it's a relatively low-trafficked area which is a haven for illegal activity. Clearly the police know that, and hopefully this unfortunate incident will accelerate the process.
I heard those shots in Columbia Heights last night from my boyfriends balcony (his apartment is near the CH Metro) - about 6 or 7 shots were fired which we first thought were fireworks. The huge police/EMT presence that showed up less than 3 minutes later confirmed my suspicions. I wonder if the shooter was arrested at the scene, because a helicopter showed up 45 minutes later and sounded like it was scoping the area for people.
I walked right into it I guess just after the shots were fired. Lots of people from the CHV and beyond were panicked and confused...
I can't believe that three cops were right in the area and still whoever did this got away with it.
That whole area will be damned for a while. Them kids think they're living in a Scarface world and act accordingly. Have you seen the available fashions at Marshalls. They are all designed after gang graffiti.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the idiots outside the Columbia Heights Subway Exit who preach religious and racial hatred. We've got to stop being PC and jump on this stuff before it gets waaaaay out of hand. The age of reason should be set at 11 years old. If you are caught doing some serious damage, then you have to pay the piper...be it death or jail.
But, but, NW is the 'good' quadrant, no?
The surest sign of an exurbanite or transplant is the professed belief that there are "good" quadrants and "bad" quadrants.
That, and referring to Dupont Circle as the Fruit Loop.
Mendo should be out walking the beat in PSAs 302 and 304- he could bring some legislative material to work on in case he has any down time.
Can someone tell me again what is in the 3000 block of Columbia and the surronding environs that would be a cause of gang crime?
Nothing- If it existed, which it doesn't, the 3000 b/o columbia would be @ about 30th and Columbia. That'd put it in the middle of Rock Creek.
there were more shootings last night that didn't end in people getting hit/killed.
looks like in addition to the one on the 300 block of W in eckington, there was something at the corner of randolph and north capitol on the bloomingdale/eckington border.
The recent infestation of the snakehead fishes in the Potomac River has me speculating that they've been copulating with the River CHUDs and have spawned mutated gun-toting youths disguised as inner-city gun-toting Scarface loving kids who don't give a dame about anything
except their low-riding pants.
Aaron, re-read the Post story. The officers, who were working plain clothes to try and stop a string of robberies came upon a fight that they tried to break up, not a robbery itself. There are reports that the fight began inside an establishment on 18th Street.
Opening up Champlain, while convenient for traffic, is not going to do anything to stem any violence. 14th and Columbia where the fatal shooting happened last night are both through streets and that didn't stop anything from happening. Opening the street is a panacea unless other issues aren't addressed.
I suppose some of this violence is seasonal, but a dispute over a baseball game? Really? I've never seen anyone play baseball in Southeast DC, including the Nats.
A dispute over a baseball game? So Fenty and the DC Council were involved in the shooting?
boondoggle, maybe nobody plays baseball in SE, but they definitely bet money on it in SE
Man, I'm just glad I live over in NE where it's safe.
