City officials are responding to a large water main break in the 1700 Block of Florida Ave., along with an accompanying gas leak and sinkhole. WTOP quotes a D.C. fire department spokesperson saying the break has led to basement flooding in homes around the vicinity of 18th and U Streets NW.
The 20-inch water main was first reported broken at about 7:30 a.m. this morning. Readers tell us Florida Ave. is effectively closed between 17th to 18th, along with part of 18th Street. DC WASA, Washington Gas, the fire department and police are all on the scene.

I was warned to be careful of using a digital camera while standing in water due to the gas leak that accompanied the water main break. I've posted a few photos.

The Ents are flooding Eisengard! The filth of Peter Nickles is washing away. Trees will come back to live here. Young trees. Wild trees.
"The Street: is now my NEW BATHROOM, Thanks Mayor Fenty"
DC's streets have ALWAYS been a bathroom; it's vermin and squirrels, your "toilet paper." And Blue Plains? Well, that's just your very own Glade Plug-in®, perfuming the breeze with the rich, earthy aroma of what you at at Jaleo last night.
Did they confirm whether or not this is a terrorist attack?
First I have to take my shoes off at the airport, and now this. The terrorists have won.
I passed by on my way to work. Parts of the asphalt are torn up and sunk down. Impressive.
It's time for DCist's fav name game: Name that mysterious object to the right of the deuce-deuce of Bud Light.

Where is Deep blaming this all on C.H.U.D.s?
