Wee! Baltimore Trapeze School Coming This Way

Baltimore's well-loved trapeze school is moving to D.C. after failing to find a permanent home in Charm City. (Hat tip to Ryan Sharrow.) I'm typically opposed to joinerish sporting trends (bocce, kickball, Donkey Ball.) but I have to admit this looks pretty awesome. My friend Nora took some classes in Baltimore and was doing some sort of complicated catch maneuver after her first class. You can watch here. Apparently, they hook you by offering a "deal" in which you buy a second class that day and get the third one free. The nasty under-knee bruises are free. The Washington Trapeze School's classes begin June 6 at 9th and H streets NW near the old convention center.

It's spelled bocce and it's hardly trendy. Calling it "Bocce Ball," however, is.

"Hey, anyone up for a game of Ping Pong Ball?"

"Yo, I played the best round of Golf Ball yesterday."

See how dumb it sounds?

Just because something has been around for a long time doesn't mean it can't become "trendy," and in the wake of the kickball craze I don't think you can see the DC Bocce community as anything but.

It's got bar sponsors and a web page for godsake. F-A-D. (and now, apparently, douchey)

Bocce trendy? Maybe. Sport? No.

Kickball trendy? Yes, however it has been around for 10 years, it is slowly moving into that institution stage.

Donkey Ball trendy? only for morning DJs in the late 80's and fat gym teachers.

Thanks for the props, Martin. Leslie would be proud.

Just because something is wildly popular, does that make it trendy? If donating thousands of dollars each year to charity is trendy, sign me up. When did trendy become a bad thing?

I think DCist is trendy. But I still love it.

And Angela - You've been to my house for dinner, why would you dis me in public like this?

Damn. From the photos, looks like I will have to wait until they start an "over 40" league

Ha! I went to see what photos NewHCE was talking about, and the DC Bocce web site is actually blocked by the filtering software my office uses. The category? Gambling.

The Hendersons will all be there
Late of Pablo-Fanques Fair, what a scene.

Whatever happened to that great "mixed use" pedestrian mall thingy they were supposed to build in that parking lot area. The plans looked awesome. I remember someone on the council was fighting for a library there (stupid given that MLK is so close). Is that DoA? Don't get me wrong, astroturf and crushed glass are actually a cool change of pace, but Id like to see some development.

Er, isn't it spelled "whee"?

"Wee" means little.

Bocce may be slightly trendy but only because it is totally awesome! It is the best way to spend an hour outdoors after work EVER. And don't think it's full of kiddies... average age is 29 w/ a range b/t 21 and 50+! And check out the charity page while you're on the site...

Summer registration opens 6/22!

I agree with GC/DC, if you define trendy as popular then bocce is the trendiest.

With a steadily growing base of fans (of all ages), a core group of young professionals who founded the league and continue to operate, and several posters on this thread I think it is well on its way from trendy to DC institution.

Doesn't sound like it was all that well loved... just sounds like you and your friend liked it.
