We knew to expect it, and now D.C. Wire is reporting that Bishop Harry Jackson, Rev. Walter Fauntroy, and their collective of gay marriage opponents did indeed file papers at D.C. Superior Court this morning to appeal the recent BOEE ruling that a city-wide referendum on same sex marriage recognition would violate the Human Rights Act, and is therefore not allowed. 'In a statement, Fauntroy called the election board's decision, ''an insult to every voter in the District of Columbia and must be legally challenged as we are doing today.''' Unless the court intervenes, the marriage recognition law recently passed by the D.C. Council will become law in July.

I wonder what law firm took this one on? While everyone is entitled to his day in court, I hope that the Reverends have a short visit.
According to this earlier filing with DCBOEE their lawyer in May was David W. New of Arlington. Anyone have today's filing with the court?
It would figure. A sole practitioner. And from Virginia, no less.
I'm curious if it's this David W. New. I'm betting yes.
Today's filing.
The lawyers are from the Alliance Defense Fund - one guy, Steven H. Aden, is from DC. The other two are from Arizona, natch ('cause everyone knows how hard it is to find a litigator here in DC), and are awaiting admission pro hac vice.
Ed, thanks.
Somewhere, out there, is a kid just swelling with pride because he wants to marry his 'My Buddy Doll'.
Rep. _________ (D-__): "Sure, the anti-same sex marriage amendment is troubling and unnecessarily infringes on D.C.'s home rule, but puppies, rainbows and unicorns are important to my constituents. Congress must act now."
Bishop: "Your Honor, it's my right as a (sort-of) citizen of the District of Columbia to come into your courtroom and waste your time fighting the HUMAN RIGHTS ACT because I and my friends from outside the District don't like it."
Judge: And it's my right as a sitting judge to throw your ignorant, intolerant butt out of my courtroom. Have a good day."
I wonder, does Nickles has standing to sue this clown for voter fraud (rather than the U.S. Attorney's Office)?
Settling the good Bishop's DC residency should be easy enough. They just need to get his totally non-gay roommate that lives with him in his one-bedroom DC condo to verify that they do indeed share the condo, as well as a mutual love of hot oil massages, Weather Girls albums, poppers, mild bondage, and labradoodles.
Is Little Lord Fauntleroy even a voter in the District?
Hmmm, how about putting Jim Crow up for popular vote in the post-Civil War south? That sounds like it would have been a grand idea.
Exactly. Perhaps we should also repeal all protections against racial discrimination in DC too!! My, my – how quickly individuals forget their own discrimination from not long ago.
"don't ask no questions...don't ask why come or how come the Pastor has to have him a nice house or why come the pastor has to have a nice car. don't ask, don't ask, i said don't ask no questions. just give the money"
Shouldn't it be a red flag for his congregation that he's turned religion into such a profitable endeavor? After buying all the houses and cars he can possibly use, especially if he's sleeping at his 'roommates' place, i guess fighting a legal battle against human/equal rights is the next logical step into the basement of moral bankruptcy.
...an insult to every voter in the District of Columbia ...
I'm not insulted. Are you insulted?
I'm not insulted either. And I object to Fauntroy assuming that he can speak on my behalf.
Anybody else think that Walter Fauntleroy bears an eerie resemblance to Porky Pig? It's uncanny. I am haunted by animated pigs with speech impediments and washed up politicians.
amen, dcdave. i'm insulted that bigot thinks he can speak for me.
Insult to the voters? Not really... although I think it does speak to the reality of life... an oppressed group of people can almost never earn their rights through a vote--there will always need to be some intervention by forward-thinking and progressive people who have the power, and the responsibility, to help those who cannot help themselves. Sure we may win a vote on this issue, but when? 2 years? 5 years? 10? 15? How long would we have to wait? Why should we have to wait any longer? How much longer should we have asked African Americans to wait for the South to decide that slavery was wrong? We fought a bloody civil war over that issue... We didn't let the people decide. And now, 150 years later we're at a juncture once again of human rights. We obviously aren't going to fight a civil war again, so I think it stands to reason these rights must be fought for using what means we have, legislation and courts, because the populace is not going to be swayed compassionately to do the right thing.
I want to vote on whether marriages between ugly guys and hot chicks should be valid in DC.
Dennis Kucinich is prepared to make sure this referendum goes nowhere.
Best comment du jour!
Now how in bloody hell does a bishop make enough money to afford 2, supposedly 3 homes?! I had a friend growing up who's father was a Baptist minister and they lived in near squaller, barely getting by and living in a church-owned house that was not much to look at. How does this man afford a $1.15M home and how does he get "gifts" like a $524k Silver Spring home to boot? I wonder how much he takes out of the offering plate to live this life of luxury and fight these costly legal battles to deny the rights of citizens he doesn't even live amongst. Bishop Jackson is a fraud and a reprehensible excuse of a man! His bigotry and deviousness will surely earn him a place in the hell he speaks so often about in his 'speeches'.
Wait, so you're saying there are church leaders who take money from their congregations and live very well off of it, when they're also trying to sound high, mighty, moral and a 'man of the people'? No, that would never happen!
ha! Ever heard of that guy... oh, what's his name...it's like, the Pope, or something?
