Are You Ready For Some Maintenance?
No? That's a shame, folks, because Metro's got a bigtime to-do list of track work on tap during the next four weekends, seemingly affecting every single line. The schedule includes some big projects: for instance, bridge maintenance outside the Stadium-Armory station, Red Line tunnel repairs, and plenty of switch replacement.
The last weekend in June looks especially prickly, with five projects scheduled over the weekend in advance of the Fourth of July holiday, when no work will likely occur due to tourist overload.
The full slate is as follows:
Friday, June 5, to Sunday, June 7
Red Line: Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes of travel time because of switch replacement work through the Brentwood rail yard near Union Station. A switch is an intersection in the track, where trains can “switch” from one track to another, depending on their destination and route. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., Friday, June 5, to closing (midnight), on Sunday, June 7.
Orange Line: Metrorail customers traveling between the Stadium-Armory and Cheverly Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes of travel time for their trips due to bridge maintenance on the aerial structure outside the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7.
Friday, June 12, to Sunday, June 14
Red Line: Metrorail customers traveling between the Van Ness-UDC and Dupont Circle Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes of travel time for their trips because Metro will replace rail fasteners that stabilize tracks and Metro will make tunnel repairs. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., Friday, June 12, to closing (midnight), on Sunday, June 14.
Blue Line: Metrorail customers traveling between the Van Dorn Street and Braddock Road Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes of travel time for their trips because Metro will be tamping the rail tracks to ensure durability. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14.
Friday, June 19, to Sunday, June 21
Orange Line: Metrorail customers traveling between the East Falls Church and West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes of travel time because Metro will replace crossties, the track support structures. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., Friday, June 19, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, June 21.
