The Breadline Hopes to Reopen in a Few Days

The Going Out Gurus had the skinny yesterday on why popular downtown lunch spot The Breadline got temporarily shut down by the D.C. Dept. of Health at the end of last week:

"Operating without a valid license, operating with incorrect hot and cold holding temps for potentially hazardous foods that do not comply with the food code and could not be corrected at the time of the inspection. Failing to minimize the presence of vermin on the premises and operating a food establishment with circumstances that may endanger the public health."

Not exactly minor violations, so it's no wonder they were shut down.

A Breadline spokesperson told the Washington Business Journal they would be closed for repairs for about a week. City Paper's Tim Carman has since posted the entire Health Dept. inspection report over at Young & Hungry.

...operating with incorrect hot and cold holding temps for potentially hazardous foods

Oh yeah I want my potentially hazardous foods kept at the right temperature.

I never understood peoples' obsession with Breadline. The original owner sold out years ago, the bread is just alright, the sandwiches are overrated and certainly not worth waiting in the ridiculous lines to pay through the nose for. I mean, if I'm gonna eat a artisinal vermin poopwich with wasabi-cholera mayo, I can get a better deal at Cap'n Goatse's Poop Deck®, and they don't make me pay extra for refills.

And the Belly Dancers at Cap'n Goatse's Poop Deck® are better entertainment than the fresh washed vermin at the Breadline.

Breadline's Cuban sandwich is alright though. About as close as you can get to a decent one in DC. Much better than the Cap'ns version, which will turn your underwear into a real Bay of Pigs fiasco. I blame the pickles and the mustard. And Communism.

Communism also ties into the lines at Georgetown Cupcake, whose popularity is similarly baffling given that communists should be eschewing the bourgeois tinfoil wrapped delicacies in favor of wonder bread or sand.

Why the Red Velvet Menace peddles its shoddy goods amid the millionaire pinko residents of Georgetown should surprise no one. The Iron Fist of Socialism will not rest until the last capitalist stooge is strangled with the entrails of the last priest. That, or choked with rich chocolate ganache, butter cream frosting, and Godiva shavings.

the bread is just alright

who has better bread in the DC area? Although that's prob more a testament to how bad bread in DC is, but I'll agree with overpriced and overrated.

It's pretty bad when the bread at Taylor Gourmet (which they have to truck in from Philadelphia) is better than the "fresh" stuff they bake around DC. Gold Crust Bakery in Old Town does decent breads, but they're a pain to get to and they mostly do wholesale. There's a Salvadorean bakery in NW that makes small baguettes (like what they use for bahn mi); reheat these in the oven and they actually taste like bread, instead of the rock-hard $h!tcakes Corner Bakery/Wholefoods/Hellers peddles.

There's no real bread culture in DC. All the European immigrants are gone and they took their bread with them. Go to Montreal or Louisiana and you find people who know how to make the stuff.

At several of the farmers markets you can get bread from Atwater's Bakery. It is amazing.

Failing to minimize the presence of vermin

So what exactly is that? Putting up signs in English, Spanish, and Bocce that say, "Vermin Must Wash Hands/Feet Before Pooping in the Prep Area?"

And I am truly heartened by Dawn Mcfadden's amazing penmanship. Clearly not a DC Public School graduate.

I used to be a staunch defender of Breadline, but I stopped going there about about 2 years ago because the quality had fallen off significantly from its better days. This report is not entirely surprising.

The only lunch place around there worth waiting in line for is Greek Deli on 19th. I don't care if the guy poops in the mousaka himself, that's some damn good Greek food, and a steal.

Trust me . . . you don't want to know the secret ingredient in the bechamel

Seriously thought -- they're alright

'ere! Is that rat tart?

Disgusting.

Where will I ever find $12 sandwiches while they're closed?

I suppose you could just buy a half dozen Filet O' Fishes and just throw them at homeless peoples' heads. But that's beside the point. The point is that DC's attempts at rat abatement are woefully inept and accomplishing nothing but breeding a population of intelligent, genetically superior rats. I have no doubt that even now, armies of feral face-f**king rats are stroking themselves into a priapic frenzy behind the prep area and ready to leap onto the faces of unsuspecting customers, just like the doughboys going over-the-top at Ypres. You have been warned.

Thank you, Breadline. Thank you so f**king much.

Operating without a valid license, operating with incorrect hot and cold holding temps for potentially hazardous foods that do not comply with the food code and could not be corrected at the time of the inspection. Failing to minimize the presence of vermin on the premises and operating a food establishment with circumstances that may endanger the public health. Frankly, I’ve heard alot of wild stories in the media and we want to assess any possibility of dangerous and possibly hazardous waste chemicals in your basement. Now you either show me what is down there, or I come back with a court order.

Lyons bakery is where it's at, but it's a commercial baker that supplies to restaurants

I never ate there because I assumed it was a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. :)

I hear they're closed for good now.
