D.C. Tops in Cocaine Use?

We were definitely just as surprised as City Desk to hear that D.C. is at the top of the country (by a pretty big margin) in cocaine use. Having lived in Los Angeles for about the same amount of time that I've now lived here, it certainly doesn't seem like there's nearly as much cocaine around as in that city, let alone as say, New York. D.C.'s full of square federal employees with security clearances to worry over, isn't it? But take a closer look at the full study. First of all, it's another one of those ones that compares D.C., an entirely urban district, with states, which are made up of both cities and large swaths of suburban and rural areas. Second, there's no separate category in this survey for crack (or any other illicit drug besides marijuana, for that matter), so it appears that is included under the "cocaine" banner. My bet is that strict cocaine use in D.C. is nowhere near as rampant as this study makes it out to be when compared to other large metropolitan areas.

This goes a long way towards explaining why people drive the way they do around here.

Although, to be fair, there's really little else to do in Herndon, Greenbelt, or even Swampoodle now that the Irish are gone.

Why would there be a separate category for cocaine and crack? Crack is cocaine. Should there be a separate category because one is done by beautiful people in nightclub bathrooms, while the other done by the poor?

Should imported French cigarettes be categorized differently than Kools? Should STDs be catagorized differently when they infect the rich?

I found her post somewhat offensive. It is as if she is saying that "The study is unfair because it makes white people look bad."

Sounds like Barry who said "if it wasn't for all the murders, crime in DC is not that bad."

IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT FORM IT IS IN!! And just what is "strict cocaine use?"

Strict cocaine use is when your mom won't let you get up from the kitchen table, saying "You know the rules in this house; if you don't knock back at least four rails you don't get any dessert."

Who can eat dessert after 4 rails??

Okay, the urban area vs. whole state comparison is a valid issue, but crack is cocaine. Just because you have different mental images and user demographic profiles associated with the two words doesn't mean that they're not still the same drug.

actually Crack is cocaine+ ammonia or sodium bicarbonate smarty pants

That's still a false distinction, though . . . isn't powder cocaine pretty much always cut with other substances?

Nate, yes, including sodium bicarbonate. But if it is done in a cocktail dress, sodium bicarbonate is totally different, obviously.

I think the post should be given the Der Award for June.

Its a huge distinction in the way it hits you / and its addictive properties.

The distinction is only in indensity. It's addictive properties are identical.

Oops. Sorry for the gratuitous apostrophe.

You presume that mean ammonium bicarbonate. Ammonia is a gas and the stuff that you buy for cleaning and as rat deterrent is so dilute that it is useless for chemistry purposes.

Regardless of what either powder cocaine or crack cocaine are cut with the psychoactive alkaloid is the same.

Cocaine is generally consumed as the salt thus the nice white powder or rock-like appearance. The powder is usually more highly purified (read more expensive, harder to process) and crack is slightly dirtier (cheaper, easier to make) but both are the same. Freebase is the pure form that has not been made into a salt. This is so delicate that is cannot be sniffed but must be vaporized.

See and you thought that chem majors were geeks.

Sorry typing and talking on the phone do not agree with me. The first sentence is supposed to read "I presume that you meant ammonium bicarbonate.

sommer needs to get out more... and not just to clarendon. go hit up the golden triangle or k street on any weekend night, plenty of coke to be found flowing in the streets. literally. and you know what they say about dc residents... WORK HARD, COKE HARD.

We prefer the more softer erotic tone of CHUD Loving.

Agreed. Throw on Martin Denny's "Quiet Village," pour out a couple of Remy Martins, rub a little Neats Foot Oil on her forehead and pretend she's Reese Witherspoon. Aw, yeah baby. I'm long, and I'm strong, and I'm bound to get the friction on. So do side bends or situps, but please don't lose that butt.

Of course, no offense intended; I prostrate my apologies to CHUD Mama Chinatown Sue.

So, wait. There's a cocaine banner now? I thought you were just supposed to go to the house with the tennis shoes hanging from the power lines out front? I'm so confused. Why didn't my helper monkey tell me these things?

What do you expect from a city that attracts so many mules crossing the border undetected.

We are cool! In your face NYC! In your face! In your face!

Oh wait it's crack

I'm puzzled by your puzzlement. Coke is everywhere in D.C. The entire restaurant industry, for example, is fueled by coke.

That depends on the restaurant, actually. The high-end sous chefs are fueled by coke and mescaline, whereas the servers at your Clydes and your Lauriol Plazas are fueled almost exclusively on meth and amyl nitrite. This is where your drug-free helper monkey staff really pays for itself. Properly trained and diapered, even the most retarded chimp can provide service equal to, if not better than, what you'd find at Kramer Books and Afterwords.

And just a friendly reminder, one of these days, the ghost of Travis the Face-eating Chimp will rise from his grave and smite all you people who take the name "retarded monkey" in vain. And when he poops, it will look exactly like your face.

I think that it should also be pointed out that there is nothing wrong with conducting a state by state study and including D.C. as a 51st sample.

It only becomes problematic when a media source (in this case, the Washington City Paper) opts to pretend that justifies an alarmist article that misconstrues the intent of the study.

Word.
And count me into the "have you heard of crack" group of commenters too.

Yeah, this sounds about right. Of course drugs are everywhere in this country, but I find cocaine use a lot more open in DC than anywhere else I've been.

I think in NY and other places, people who use drugs tend to keep the subject quiet unless they're talking to other people they know who use them. In DC, I find people I've never met before casually telling me about their drug escapades. Real-life examples of things people have told me:

"OMG, you're from NY? I *love* NY; I got the best cocaine there!" (This, after I'd met him 2 minutes before.)

"I once went on Nightline totally high on cocaine."

I think much of it is just the usual grotesque DC lawyer-types who use drugs as yet another means of conspicuous consumption.

What's the diff between crack and freebase? I stopped using the shit a long time ago because I couldn't form complete and fax back to us diagramming sentences is really hard to comprehend.

Now we know! Wizzyliz = Sarah Palin.

With the Childe Harold closed this statistic ought to come down a bit.

the federal employees are exactly the ones who use cocaine. at work. I'm not kidding. between those folks and the bar/restaurant workers, there is a ton of cocaine being used around dc before you even take a look at the underprivileged.

How else can you celebrate graduating from the SES program?

If you wanna get down, down on the ground; cocaine.

When a female CHUD is sexually aroused she secretes a musky resin that when ingested causes an intense fluxing of the blood vessels in the males genital region. CHUD lovers say that it smells like a cross between Hazelnuts and wet unwashed Pandas. There is an Asian CHUD market for this secretion that is rapidly giving faux Viagra a run for its money.

A run for the money wouldn't be one of those fine print side effects, would it?

Why would this even get reported? Reports that seriously compare DC to states in matters such as this should not be given the validation of mention, in any context, ever.

Name ANY urban phenomena, and DC will beat out all of the other states every single time. At least have the good sense to mention that it's in comparison to other states in the headline, so I don't waste a god damn mouse click looking at the post.

You all really let me down. I didn't even come in here to read the article. I was really looking forward to some good Marion Barry jokes.

Tsk Tsk.
