Just a little straight up feel good PR from grocer Giant Food. The company sent out word today that it donated the $100,000 commission it received from the D.C. Lottery as a result of selling that winning $144 million Powerball jackpot ticket to the Capital Area Food Bank. The winning ticket came from the relatively new Giant on Alabama Avenue in Southeast. The Food Bank plans to use the money to support the renovation and construction of a new, bigger food distribution center.

NICE! Way to show some class, Giant!
Agreed. Nice!
In America, is there anybody who actually goes hungry?
I mean, rice and beans costs what, a buck a day, if that?
I think we're the only country in the world where our "poor" people are obese.
Yeah, good luck offering a homeless person some beans and rice. They'd be all like, "F**k is this $h!t? I can't eat this? Where the f**k my five-piece spicy and a biscuit, muthaf**ker?"
the conventional wisdom: this might be because our country subsidizes large agriculture and makers of processed items, so they're unnaturally cheaper than buying more nutritious food. Plus, poor folks in cities often can't exactly grow their own food the way some folks in other countries can, and having the time & materials (functioning kitchen, pots & pans, etc.) to cook for oneself is costly. There are neighborhoods where it's a lot easier to buy a burger than a banana.
But I agree that a lot of it is what people are used to. I won't give money to panhandlers but I'll often offer to give or buy some food. On the (RARE) occasion someone says yes, I've never had my offer of the apple or granola bar I sometimes carry accepted, and even when I'm close to a grocery store or other place selling healthy food, no one's ever picked something like a salad. But I guess part of that is if you're actually hungry, you don't really want a salad.
Oh, and we're definitely not the only country where rich people are thinner than poor ones. Check out Great Britain, for one example.
