Friday night's two sold out Michael Jackson tribute shows at the 9:30 Club were eerily timed and enthusiastically attended. The band itself, Who's Bad, was... also enthusiastic! Okay, so some moments were unintentionally hilarious and others were just plain odd (the slideshow of pictures of Jackson throughout the years, interspersed with stock photos of orphans springs to mind), but for the most part they gave a crowd of people eager to remember the recently deceased legend exactly what they were looking for -- and that, of course, was the "Thriller" dance. A huge scene developed outside as people waited to get into the late show, and we were there to document a few of the best Michael-inspired get ups we saw on the scene.

Car Pushed Into Anacostia River By Train

Geez, were any of those fans even born before Thriller? Looks more like it was an opportunity for hipsters to co-opt an era they have no awareness of. (Honey, no one wore those fugly butterfly shirts back then. They went straight to the clearance rack at Marshall's. Then to the dumpster.)
I went to middle and high school in the 80s. It's an era I don't want to relive.
Yeah, that's my thought. This was not a decade to resurrect, I can assure them.
Celebrity holocaust continues — Billy Mays dies!
See:
To this day I still find it troubling when a man would wear one glove while singing "Beat It!"
Who hasn't done that?
Who hasn't done that?
Twice
This is creepy... I was born in 1984 and what little I recall of Jackon's life was long after he became a bizare tabloid freak-fest! Before his death, I bet most of these kids (probably younger than myself even) would have had either no opinion of Michael Jackson, or would have had a slightly negative opinion. The scandal is all most people can recall--with exception of course to those born in late 70's who saw him from the get go--so I really feel this is just a media-exploited money making fad. Seriously...the guy was a fruit loop! Celebrate his contributions and his music fine, but it's been long enough on the headlines and I really don't care how he died or where is doctor is. Jeez... If I see one more picture of the creepy pale face and pink lips I think I might have to throw up...
At least Billy Mays dying is actually somewhat of a shocker and someone you might actually miss... Give me a lumberjack oxy cleaner over a tinker-bell-fairy anyday!
Give me no commenter at all over a nitwit any day!
thank you! my thoughts exactly.
With all due respect, every generation has their own superstars. I certainly didn't spout off when Elvis croaked or Kurt Cobain even. So please allow us the courtesy of some self-indulgent caterwauling over this.
Seriously?? You were born in 1984, it's too soon for you to provide commentary on MJ--his life, his work, his death--unless you do some research or something first.
I was born in 1980 and saw Micheal Jackson live three times, once in Wembley, twice in Paris. Am i allowed to comment or do I need to do a little research on his as well before I do??
"HI, BILLY MAYS HERE FOR THE AFTERLIFE..."
(Too soon?)
Nah. Mock away!!
I was standing near one of these girls pictured in line, and not only was I born well before you, Michael Jackson was one of the most influential icons of my childhood and into my early teens. As a music lover, I've always had a profound respect for his immense talent and his death was jarring for me. And yes, not everyone at this show (particuarly the people who turned up looking as if they had just been evacuated from Smith Point) was there for the right reasons and instead wanted to be a part of the sensation, everyone around me (including the girl in the picture I am talking about) knew every word to every song and sang it while standing in line.
You know what's creepy? How astonishingly whiney, judgemental and cynical people in this town can be. It's staggering. You may now return to complaining about the Real World and how it's going to RUIN! your life.
*judgmental.
