Mosquito Grossed

Sunday's heavenly sunshine and cool breezes may have helped push last week's endless thunderstorms into the backs of our minds, but WTOP's Kristi King reminds us that this spring's increased rainfall will have lasting effects in form of incessant mosquitoes. King quotes Mosquito Control Program Manager for the Maryland Department of Agriculture Mike Cantwell as noting that the D.C. metro area is in store for increased mosquito activity this season in the evenings, nights and early mornings, and even more fun, later in the summer we should get even more of those annoying daytime tiger mosquitoes. Highly unscientific anecdotal evidence gathered at DCist HQ shows that the number of mosquito bites received by staffers thus far in the month of June far exceeds the same period last year. How pesky are you finding the city's skeeters this year?

knock on wood, i haven't had a big problem with them yet.

They're definitely bad this year...always hanging out by my door waiting to get in and feast on my sweet, sweet hematological nectar. All the rain has definitely made them worse

Bad, but not as bad as last year. I don't know whether it's the bugs or the fact that I've pretty much given up on wearing shorts LIttle f**kers always go for the ankles and back of the calves. Also got one of those UV bug zappers. I know they kill mostly moths and mayflies and only about 20 percent of the mosquitos, but it's still 20 percent more than doing nothing.

An old wives tales suggests that a healthy spray of good ole Listerine is a mosquito deterrent. Of course, if you spray yourself rather than the area around you, you'll smell like the dirtiest dentist in the world. Is it worth it to keep those Tigers away?

There's another old wive's tale that mosquitos won't bite horny teens in Daisy Dukes and knee socks if they slather themselves with Hawaiian Tropic Suntain Oil and show up at my place with a case of beer and a bag of Little Tavern burgers.

At least the mosquitos won't bit you.

This year seems as bad as any other year, but I always get horribly bitten. Or maybe I just have a stronger reaction to the bites than other people. But in any event, I haven't noticed a particular increase, but definitely not a decrease either.

Anyone up for a trip to the West Nile?

Really have not had a problem so far this year. Though we've been proactive about getting mosquito traps and drying up sitting water. I'll be damned to let these pests destroy my stooping.

i went out to my backyard saturday - boy, oh boy. they really like that standing water. i had SWARMS. needless to say, i did not do much gardening.

Speaking of mosquitoes, anyone see the display of mosquito nets all around Dupont Circle this morning? It's raising awareness for "nothingbutnets.net" - a UN program that provides mosquito nets to people in Africa. Check out the site if you can.

I say bring 'em on! My blood is so toxic it could wipe out the next generation of tiger mosquitoes.
