People Are Animals

Well this is the most disturbing thing I've run across today, and I watched that entire Mark Sanford press conference debacle. WTOP reports that the family of Ana Fernandez, one of the victims of Monday's fatal Metro crash, has been getting hate-filled phone calls from people questioning whether she and her family are legal immigrants. No one has ever questioned Fernandez's immigration status, and a family member has already told the media that all six of her now motherless children were born in the United States and full U.S. citizens, but still, the sort of people who watch Lou Dobbs are calling their home and harassing them, just because their last name is Hispanic. Here's hoping the people making those calls never have to deal with a terrible family tragedy. Jackals.

Keep 'em on the phone (as painful as it may be) and get the cops to trace the calls. The scumbags making them are probably sitting on their asses in their parents' basements drawing phony disability claims. Expose them to the daylight of public shame.

Sympathies to the Fernandez family, who have enough grief to deal with without this.

dipshits, they should get a caller id and make sure to take the numbers down.

That is low and at such a time.

Here's hoping they DO have to deal with a terrible family tragedy of devastatingly tragic proportions. Nothing else would get through.

That's horrible. I never read comment pages on WaPo or any of the tv station sites-- it's disgusting how ignorant and racist people can be behind a computer screen. Of course, they have the right to believe and say it, but I feel bad for people who are that consumed by hatred that they'd harass a grieving family.

For awhile now it has felt like the right has comment bombed WaPo. :(

I think the problem with the WaPo comment threads is that every hate filled polarized loon with internet access in this country is CONVINCED that they can somehow have an effect on policy by trolling the Post threads.

WaPo comment threads have become, hands down, the ugliest sewer on the internet.

You need to spend more time on the WTOP comment threads. These dildos blame everything from declining crab populations to global warming on illegal immigrants.

Strike that. AVOID the WTOP comment threads.

I don't know if it's still available, but *57 used to forward the number of the last caller to the authorities immediately after receiving a threatening call (on a land line).. and for a fee.

I don't understand the correlation you're trying to make between Gov. Sanford and Ana Fernandez?

It is not a connection twixt the two incidents the author is making, it is a comparison of horrible things. She's simply saying even after the awful, sad and horrendous Sanford press conference, these phone calls are EVEN worse. How could it be? Where has people's humanity gone?

Both events are terribly sad. Their aftermaths have just begun. The best thing we can do is be as kind as humanly possible to one another.

Sommer, please correct me if I'm wrong in my interpretation.

This should be called People Are People, because animals aren't so stupid and petty.

That is sick! They're no better than the James von Brunn's of the world.

Howard Stern rules! Howard Stern rules!

This is horrible. What kind of people would torment the family like that? BTW, the comment threads in general on WTOP are scary.

Most comment boards are pretty sketchy when you them...AOL & WTOP in particular just make me want to cringe. I say some pretty mean and biting things, mostly in gest and to get a reaction, but these people are full of ignorant and hateful vitriol. They have no value of difference, and now seemeingly, no compassion. These sites might be better served not even having posts available. We all might be better served if they were to all be on a train that flew off a bridge.

Maybe they'll get distracted by the Sanford scandal, and start calling Maria in Argentina to chide her for being a foreign national.

News like this makes my trigger finger itchy.

Also, is it my imagination or does DCist have one of the more sane and rational comment threads in the DC blogosphere?

You haven't been following Deep lately, have you?

Not really, but even with Deep in the mix there's not much going on here in the comments that rivals the shit show at CP's "The Sexist" when she did a story called "Menace to Sorority."

I also think it also might have something to do with the fact that dcist "sucks" and has been "dying" for going on four years now.

When you're on your deathbed, you don't have much use for pretense.

Ugh, truly horrible.

However, I think you're being unnecessarily insulting to jackals, animals, and even the sort of people who watch Lou Dobbs (whom I do not generally waste my breath defending) by comparing them to these ... (struggling for words) ... heartless, sociopathic morons.

Damn hateful. Sounds like we have some full citizens who should be kicked out of our country for being such asses.

My sympathies to the families involved for their losses, and for the insensitivity of those discussed today.

The sort of people who watch Lou Dobbs probably think that people with the last name of Fernandez are the sort of people who are illegal immigrants.

Wait, what?

Who is making the sweeping generalization here? (hint: both)

(Note that I am not defending Lou Dobbs or anybody with crazy ideas)

And I agree with atstupple's comment.
