We weren't in much of a mood to pick a Photo of the Day this morning, but our spirits were lifted when we spotted these terrific snaps of Saturday's 2009 DC Soap Box Derby shot by Flickr contributor Paul Sharratt. (EXIF)
Begun in 1934, the origins of the self-proclaimed "Greatest Amateur Racing Event in the World" are rather intriguing.

Dang, I guess I need to pay more attention to weekend events... I had no idea this was going on. Would've been fun to watch.
Agreed! Nice photograph Paul!
Greatest Amateur Racing Event in the World? I think the founders of the Gumball Rally, the Iditarod, and the Peking-to-Paris Naked Oompah Loompah Rickshaw Race would take issue with that statement.
Not to mention Amateur Female Teen Wrestling.
i fail to see how wrestling can be considered a race.
A race to change the channel when my wife comes into the room?
I totally just checked out the Derby association's website. Their kits run upwards of $400!!!! WTF happened to the days where Papa Monkey could bungee strap all of his retarded monkeys to a doorless fridge with wheels and fling them down a long, steep hill?
they'd prolly go faster if they wore aero helmets like time trialists.
Awesome!!! I am so bummed I didn't know about this.
