Those of us looking to support this weekend's Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure that are less running-inclined—a relatively small number in D.C., apparently—are in luck. Georgetown Cupcake is serving up a much sweeter and more sedentary way to contribute. The Potomac St. NW bakery has designed an honorary pink ribbon cupcake to raise money for the team it is sponsoring in the race, and will be selling the cupcake until June 6, the day of the race. Pick up a few of the scrumptious Madagascar Bourbon vanilla cupcakes with vanilla butter cream frosting if you want to help the bakery reach its fund-raising goal of $10,000. 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the treats go toward the breast cancer charity, and rumor has it that little bit of love makes the 'cakes taste even better.

For all you runners out there, stay away from the Komen races. Worst run races ever. Even potentially dangerous. There are plenty of other charity races to run.
Dangerous how? Overcrowding? Bad course marking?
Don't think my last post made it. Short version
Too many "fun runners" lining up near the front
No one enforcing the "no stroller" rule-especially up front. (special place in Hell for these self-absorbed, irresponsible parents).
No water at the finish (you needed to walk back to near the start). not a prob for me, but this thing brings out a lot of out of shape people who push themselves too hard in the heat.
They should get rid of the chip system and call it a fun run so it won't be confused with an actual race.
Thanks for that! I was actually considering running the race but not now.
Sorry that all the people that want to do good get in the way of your race. Instead of telling people not to participate at all tell them that they can walk instead of running. Sorry not everyone is in shape and slows you down. If you want a competitive race go run a marathon. If you want to help people show up on Saturday and walk. I know lots of people that run the race and have no problem.

With chip timing and a corral system, you can have a competitive race and help people. But without some way of encouraging the slower folks to start in the back, the promise of chip timing is just going to frustrate serious runners. And if those people get frustrated enough no to running it next year, your left no better off than if you just called it a fun run to begin with.
Amen boondoggle. They need to do something akin to what Lawyers Have Heart do - a staggered start for nearly everyone (purely voluntary). The "fun run" has a separate start, and the serious runners are put at the front of the pack.
It's still bedlam at the start but there's no serious risk of injury. About the worst that can happen is a first year associate from Wiley, Coyote & Anvil starts back with the 9:00 mile mark so he can look good flying by everyone. These types are usually passed out and puking at the 4 mile mark where they're met with a hearty Nelson Muntz.
Lawyers have heart. That is a good race.
I have to say the course is a disappointment. Out the Whitehurst, then Canal and back again. It used to be more fun when it went through the sidestreets in Gtown. Still, it's one of my three to four races a year. Good atmosphere and freebies.
Look for me: I'll be the one wearing the diaper and the "I Shot J.R." t-shirt.
I used to live in NYC and got spoiled with the 2 to 3 races a month the NYRR hosted there. (including about 10 half marathons!!). Wish DC had more races.
I think the Marine Corps Marathon makes up for it tho. Awesome course, great time of year and (as I recall, I haven't checked in a while) you can still enter without the need for a qualifying time.
The metro region has plenty of races and running clubs, but there seem to be few races that are either metro accessible or in the city itself. Thanks for the advice; I'll run Lawyers Have Heart 10k instead.
I know!! I am carless so it is tough to get to a lot races
Geez, read my comment, will ya? I've run more charity races than I can count (probably over 50). If you just want to go experience it and do it as a fun run, then by all means do it. I am just saying that if you are going expecting the same quality race experience that many other charities host and focus on actual racing, then this may not be the one for you.
Not to be outdone, Cake Love sponsored their own "Race From the Cupcake" wherein participants sprint to the bathroom before their pants explode. All proceeds go to the Immodium Foundation Scholarship Fund for the Study of Why People Pay $5 for Nasty Dry-Ass Cupcakes that Make Their Pants Explode.
You're baiting me.
Who eats all these cakes and cupcakes? I find that if I have more than one cake a year, I gain weight. Or is that why people do stuff like running?
The Cupcake - Food of the Man-Child.
All the more reason why these $5 cupcake boutiques need to be replaced by stores that sell Ho Hos, Ding Dongs, and Suzy Qs.
By which I mean brothels.
Is the brothel selling Ding Dongs the one that caters to lepers...?
No. That's the place next door. The one that sells the Donner kebabs.
