Dish of the Week: Otterbein's Chocolate Chip Cookies
Where: Giant, Magruder's, Wagschal's

One of the better known cookies from Baltimore is Berger's - a soft cookie slathered in fudge frosting. It is a cookie for the true frosting or fudge lover. It can be overwhelming, which is why I tend to go for another company's cookies - Otterbein's Bakery. If you were like me, you might have glimpsed the red bag at the grocery store and thought these were just like any other mundane chocolate chip cookie. And there's where you would be wrong. Otterbein's chocolate chip cookies are baked to a perfect thin crispness that even underbaked cookie lovers could learn to appreciate. The cookie is a perfect balance of flavors, just sweet enough with a golden butteryness and just the right hint of salt. They aren't exactly chock full of chocolate chips (though oddly in these cookies they like to cluster together), but the dough in between is so great that it makes no difference.

Otterbein's started in Baltimore in 1881 churning out various baked goods, including sugar cookies. They eventually expanded outside of the plain sugar cookies into ginger snaps, oatmeal raisin, and chocolate chip. The cookies themselves show evidence of how relatively small the operation is. The ginger snaps and sugar cookies come out in odd shaped shards, and the batches don't seem to always look exactly the same color. But even when they aren't precisely the same, the cookies are still excellent, a great thing for locavores and cookie lovers alike.

Small Bites
Brownies from Strangers
Bliss Spa is running around near the White House giving out brownies from Baked & Wired, Bread and Chocolate, and Heller's Bakery until June 30. They want to figure out who makes the best brownie. It's part of their promotion to get people excited about the new Bliss Spa opening at the W Hotel on July 8. You have to wonder if they're just trying to get more buyers for their product, Fat Girl Slim. You can go vote for your favorite brownie.

If brownies aren't enough, there's a caffeine-pocalypse Saturday and Sunday at McDonald's. They're promoting a free small hot or medium iced coffee to celebrate Father's Day.

Third (Fourth) Time's the Charm?
Chef Roberto Donna has officially signed the contracts to open Galileo III in the old Butterfield 9 space on 14th Street. The name hints at the previous two Galileos, not mentioning the little stop at Bebo Trattoria in Crystal City that was supposed to be until the second Galileo was finished with "renovations." The new restaurant will be smaller and hopefully more manageable. No mention if he will bring back the delicious lunch time grill sandwiches, such as the pork shoulder with broccoli rabe.

National Capital Barbecue: Not Worth It?
The National Capital Barbecue Battle is pretty heavily advertised, and you might be wondering if it's worth your buck. Looking back on the comments from last year, you might want to consider the Beer, Bourbon and Barbecue Festival this weekend at the National Harbor instead.
