>> Woodwind artist Anthony Nelson has played as a sideman with the finest in jazz and beyond, ranging from violinist Regina Carter to the late great Ray Charles. He will lead his own group through 9 and 11 p.m. sets on Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz. Tickets are $15.
>> In 1980, guitarist Pat Martino, who was well established in the jazz community, suffered a brain aneurysm that left him with no memories of playing music. Through years of practice and rehab, he learned to play guitar again. Martino will lead a quartet that includes monster drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts this Friday through Sunday at Blues Alley. The 8 and 10 p.m. sets are being recorded for a future live release. Tickets are $32.50 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
>> Viento de Agua is a Puerto Rican ensemble that combines traditional bomba and plena styles with the improvisation and harmonies of jazz. They will play the Millennium Stage on Sunday as part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. 6 p.m. Free.
>> Acoustic guitar group Might Could trades sets with ubiquitous guitarist, and Three Stars alum, John Lee on Sunday at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 7 to 11 p.m. No cover
>> This is a good time to remind folks that D.C.'s only regular big band night takes place every Monday at Bohemian Caverns. Three Stars alum and DCist fave Thad Wilson leads his jazz orchestra from 8 p.m. to midnight. $5
>> Pianist Wayne Wilentz has been a regular on the local scene for years, and is one of the area's foremost authorities on Brazilian jazz. He is playing the Bossa Bistro & Lounge on Tuesday. 9:30 p.m. No cover.
