Old folks looking for their daily dose of The Wheel aren't the only people in the District wondering where Pat Sajak, Vanna White, and all the other television personalities who help to usher the way through this lonely life have all gone off to. ABC 7 reports that some 80,000 people were unprepared for the digital flip: They turned on, but it was the television that tuned out. It's kind of unthinkable that a conscious person could have missed all the discussion about the digital transition, but hey, they still field fair and unbiased juries for Michael Jackson. In any case, DCist understands the need to step away from the computer to go sit in front of another screen. Seniors may consult an initiative by the D.C. Office on Aging that has been sending DTV experts to do at-home consultations. ABC 7 has a number people can call until 3 p.m. today (703-236-9321) for assistance with setup, and the Geek Squad is stationed at Best Buy to help people with questions. For all this trouble, what did the government get out of the deal? Just a lousy $19.6 billion.

While I knew of a digital transition, I had no idea it was happening now. Evidently I'm either 80 or I live in a cave. Or I'm a CHUD.
CHUDS are highly intelligent creatures. Most of them were once human so it depends on what their IQ was before they transformed. The offsprings are a different lot all together. I blame the school system.
You may as well have said: " So simple, even a caveman could do it." Mama CHUD Chinatown Sue is filling with fluid. If you could just smell her anger. It's like a cross between a corndog and funnel cake. Quite pleasant, really, but ooooo if she could just get her claws around...."Now...now...dear! Calm down. Oh boy! Here we go!"
Actually, ABC7 and CBS9 both made switches they didn't tell the public about -- from a UHF signal to a VHF signal, so anyone with a UHF antenna who turned to channel 7 yesterday would, in fact, see a dark screen.
Channels 7 and 9 did ALL their tests with a UHF signal, so everyone thought they were good, but then without warning switched to VHF, leaving thousands of people with converter boxes or rabbit ears in the dark. You could have paid every bit of attention and fully prepared and still be out of luck with ABC and CBS.
Kriston -- its a big problem that still isn't resolved or reported on fully, you might want to look into it.
The DTV transition is no trouble at all if your cables are correctly bipolarized. Go to Screen 47 of the DTV Converter Box On-Screen Installation Guide and use the resident GPS to correctly align your antenna for each channel (allowing for local ionospheric conditions)and ARRRGGGHH!
