Arts Agenda
On July 12, Cyrus Katzen passed away at the age of 91. He was a major benefactor for many D.C. institutions, not the least of which was American University's Katzen Art Center. Pay tribute to this arts patron by checking out the ongoing exhibits at his eponymous gallery; on Saturday you can hear amazing local sculptor Margaret Boozer talk about her installations of unfired local clays in Dirt Drawings. 2 p.m.
>> Head to Flashpoint tonight for the opening of M3: MCs, Mics and Metaphors. A group of artists from around the country were asked to create art based on the theme of their favorite MC or hip-hop song. Tonight join host Asheru and Deejay Munch for the reception, 6 to 8 p.m.
>> Over at Honfleur Gallery, get a little Summer Jamboree action with live music at the closing reception of their two exhibits, Timelines and Reincorporation Jamboree. The nine-piece band The Bellevederes will play some "Baltimore boogaloo" from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday.
>> See the black and white architectural and landscape photographs of The Velvet Underground's Lou Reed at the opening reception at Adamson Gallery on Saturday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
>> Heavy Hitterz is the annual group show at Art Whino, featuring "emerging artists from the lowbrow and graffiti art scene." You get the exhibit with over 60 artists, live painting, and DJs from 6 p.m. to midnight on Saturday.
>> We missed the opening last week, so head to the Healing Arts Gallery during their regular hours to see Finding Beauty In A Broken World: In the Spirit of Frida Kahlo, an exhibit juried by F. Lennox Campello.
>> Tonight visit Gallery Plan B for the linear-focused exhibit Line Forms Here with a reception, 6 to 8 p.m.
>> At the Phillips Collection's weekly Thursday lecture, hear about "psychological state of both sitter and artist" with discussions of work by Ivan Albright, Francis Bacon, Alice Neel, and Lucian Freud. 6 and 7 p.m., free with price of admission.
