D.C. Misses Payment to Charter Schools

Bad news for D.C. charter school teachers: you may not be getting paid on Friday, according to a story just posted to the Post's website. D.C. missed a $103 million payment to its 60 public charter schools this morning, thanks to some kind of tax revenue shortfall or delay, Bill Turque reports. The District is facing at least a $190 million deficit in the current fiscal year, thanks to shrinking tax revenues due to the recession. The Post story says that charter board officials are negotiating with the city to make some kind of partial payment from contingency funds to help them meet immediate payroll needs.

So let me get this straight... we can't get our budget together in time for congressional review (even though I, and most DC residents, are paying a 9.2% or so marginal tax rate), so we're going to screw over a bunch of teachers who are working their butts off to try to teach our students for a barely living wage in the District. Meanwhile, while Mayor-for-Life Hypocrite Crackhead can give his girlfriend a $60,000 contract that winds up having requirements like reading some self-help books? Just trying to make sure I've got this right so I know which recall petitions to sign. Oh, that's right - ALL OF THEM.

Easy formula to remember: District = Fail.
