DCist's August Theater Preview

musicals.jpg August is notoriously the slowest month on the D.C. theater scene, and this year isn't an exception. But there's still a little Shakespeare, a little Mae West -- even a little bit of zombies to get you through the month.

August's highlight is the annual Free For All production by Shakespeare Theater, which this year has been moved inside, at the Harman Center. It's Taming of the Shrew, which we really enjoyed. (Aug. 27)

On the zombie front, there's the Shakespearean-themed Living Dead in Denmark, which closes Rorschach's condensed season (Aug. 2).

If you want a little Broadway injection, you've got a couple options -- Wolf Trap hosts Broadway Rocks! (Aug. 1) and MetroStage brings back The Musical of Musicals: The Musical (Aug. 27).

Also this month

  • Emily Skinner IS Mae West in Signature's Dirty Blonde (Aug. 11).
  • Scena's back on the (wait for it) scene with Dublin Carol (Aug. 22).
  • Camille: A Tearjerker is WSC's new spin on the Moulin Rouge-esque classic (Aug 27).
  • Zero Mostel fans should consider Zero Hour at Theater J (Aug. 29).

Still playing: This weekend is your last chance for Spring Awakening, the popular touring musical at the Kennedy Center, as well as Forum's Dark Play; Aug. 9 means the close of the political Barack Stars at Woolly, Studio's Fucking A, Firebelly's Hamlet, and the passionate A Color Purple at Kennedy; and Olney's Ain't Misbehaving; the following weekend is the last for Keegan's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Rorschach's Dead City; Edward Albee's Seascape at American Century closes Aug. 22, and Oklahoma! at Toby's Dinner Theater finishes up Aug. 30.
