DCRA Offers a Map of All Legal Fireworks Stands in D.C.

View Approved DC Fireworks Stands 2009 in a larger map

Looking to set off a few sparklers this Independence Day weekend? The D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs has put together a Google map displaying the locations of all the licensed, legal fireworks stands inside the city. The effort is clearly designed to discourage people from buying any firecrackers from illegal fireworks dealers, as the map comes with this plea to start snitchin':

To report a suspected illegal firework vendor or a licensed vendor suspected of selling illegal fireworks, please call 911 immediately. Residents can also provide tips to the Metropolitan Police Department by calling Anonymous Tip Line: 1-888-919-CRIME or sending a text message to 50-411.
Confused about what kinds of fireworks are legal and which aren't? Broadly, any firecrackers that do more than crackle or sparkle - ones that actually explode like cherry bombs, roman candles, or floral shells, are illegal. You can download a PDF listing all of the approved fireworks for 2009 from the D.C. Fire Department.

Gee, I'm totally surprised that the fireworks stand on 11th and S st NW isn't on this map. I could of sworn that fireworks stand that popped up over last week was legit. Seriously. Oh, darn. Now they have to close down.
*wipes tear from face*

Umm, it's on the above map.

oh crap. it is. I should of zoomed in closer. Now I really am crying.

Ha! Why bother you are 1 hour away from the greatest firework store on earth, Pennsylvania! Nothing like filling up you cart with 500-gram cakes and a quarter million bottle rockets. Don’t forget your pyro-card!

What kind of fool buys legal fireworks in DC when they're practically giving away guns on the street? Granted, ammunition isn't cheap, but you can always use your empty gun to threaten fireworks vendors to hand over those lame-ass sparklers and those little worm things that smell like burnt hair.

And as tempting as it might be, please, don't shove lit firecrackers up your ass.

I wonder if you overlaid this map and this year’s homicide map would you have an amazing resemblance?

Awesome!!! Magic Black Snakes are legal!! Now we can really party!! Nothing says fun to me like gathering the neighbors around to watch me magically transform a black pellet into an 8" ash turd.

Bah who cares. I'll light off the fireworks I want, where I want. Know why? Cuz its 4th of July and this is goddamn America. P.S. FUCK THE CHILDREN.

At least you are thinking of the children.

What, nothing in Penn Quarter? Damn!

Of course not. Penn Quarter residents are too good for fireworks stands...they even had to create their own neighborhood name to get separated from Chinatown/Downtown.

Plus, they'd likely just complain if there were a local stand.

What's the ratio of firework stands to grocery stores in Ward 8? I'm going to guess that it's than 1:1. That seems troubling.

There's one large chain grocery store (Giant) in Ward 8... so, it looks like it's 7:1.

The real question is: is there adequate walkability to fireworks stands?

They want us to call 911 for illegal fireworks sales?

I'm getting mixed signals. Isn't that exactly the kind of thing 311 is supposed to be for? You know, non-emergencies? Those ads on the bus tell me to only call 911 for serious, life-threatening emergencies. And DCRA wants me to call 911 cuz someone's selling bottle rockets?

911 is now for *any* time you want someone (police, fire, ambulance) to respond-- life-threatening emergency or not.

Mayor Fenty, in his infinite wisdom, drastically changed the old 311 system, asking people to now alwasy call 911.

The new 311 is the old 727-1000, which is used for other city services.

MPD hasn't gotten that word yet. I'd put this in the first catagory. From their site:

* Property crimes that are no longer in progress and the offender is not on the scene. These include crimes such as vandalism, thefts, graffiti, stolen autos, and garage burglaries
* Animal control problems
* Illegally parked vehicles or vehicles blocking alleys or driveways, but that are not blocking traffic flow
* Minor vehicle crashes where there are no injuries and traffic is not blocked
*Phone numbers, addresses, hours of operation, etc., of MPDC units or programs (you can also look up phone numbers and addresses online in the MPD Directory)
*All other city services, such as Public Works, Motor Vehicles, Human Services, and the Mayor’s Office
*Trash pick up problems
* City agency phone numbers, addresses and hours of operations
*Potholes

I would consider it an emergency if you were to see illegal fireworks being sold to minors anywhere near where Marion Barry is operating a barbecue and dousing said minors in hot sauce. His doctor told him to cut back on the sweet, milk-fed babies.

Heh. There's a fontain on the approved list called a Golden Shower.

Oh geeze, you are right. In fact, most of the list looks like its either a sex act/toy. For example:

Devil's Delight
Dragon Blaster
Amazing Morning Glory
Opening Flowers
Boomer Fountain
Screaming Tiger
Black Magic Snakes
Raging Monster

legal fireworks? how about a map of where the illegal fireworks are? that we can use.
