The Post reports that a 16-year-old was shot and killed near Nationals Park yesterday afternoon. Kevin D. Allen of Northwest D.C. was found lying in an alley on the unit block of N Street SW at around 12:30 p.m., and pronounced dead later at the hospital. That is only about a block away from Nationals Park, but there wasn't a game going on that day. No motives or suspects have been reported in the killing.

That is only about a block away from Nationals Park, but there wasn't a game going on that day.
And this is relevant...how?
I look forward to future accounts of fatal shootings ocurring only a block away from the Black Cat which include the caveat, "but there wasn't a Le Loup show going on that day."
Perhaps so season ticket holders don't freak out by the reminder that the stadium is in a shitty part of town?
No, it's more like a part of town that used to be sh*tty.
Don't kid yourself, that is a shitty part of a town.
Isn't the stadium a few blocks away from a pretty large public or section 8 apartment block with an active drug market?
Yup. Syphax Gardens. Totally delightful. Fort McNair couldn't build its walls any higher.
Is there any place in DC that isn't a few blocks away from an active drug market?
there's also 203 and James Creek nearby :)
Not to mention the 1D police station a thousand feet away.
The relevance of there being a game or not is obviously because of the sheer amount of foot traffic in that vicinity from both game patrons and the city crossing guards at (SoCap and M). Not to mention, the 5-0 sweeps through those (my) neighborhood streets to nail out-of-zone street parkers. Stadium employees from VA and MD park on my street and don't get out of night games until after 11:00 most times and they get nailed with ticket after ticket.
Anyway, this is literally one block from my house and I had no idea...
There is plenty of foot traffic during the day with all the Navy Yard and DoT employees.
I work in the area and this is the first time I'm hearing about it as well.
Not really - the Navy Yard and DOT foot traffic all heads east from the Navy Yard metro escalators. This occurred over on the west side of South Capitol Street...there's definitely no DOT or Navy Yard employees strolling around over there.
So is Jim Graham going to close Nationals Stadium now?
South Cap. is like the Berlin Wall in that neighborhood. The west side is scary.
"The west side is scary."
Tis only when I walk outside with my American Apparel shirt on!
Or my white face on.
Yeah, but it's only scary if you're a Shark or a Jet.
*snaps fingers*
Because...
When you're a thug, you're a thug all the way,
From your first sale of boat to your last dying day!
*jazz hands*
When you're a thug, you're the blingingest thing,
Little boy, you're a man! Little man, you're an absentee father of three who sings!
*jazz hands*
I'm telling you I want to live in Anacostia
I want to live in Anacostia
*Jazz hands X 2*
Okay, the shooting didn't take place in Anacostia, but there is not alliteration in "I want to live in Southwest Waterfront"
Our mothers all are junkies!
Our fathers all are drunks!
Golly Moses, natcherly we're punks!
* more jazz hands*
Shouldn't that be, "So, natcherly, we have to punch the junk"?
"I'm depraved on account of I'm deprived!"
Darling, this comment reminded me of your last memorable jazz hands performance entitled the "Hanky Panky". I believe you were using your stage name of Ursula Martinez...
Wow, DCist, please bring back the that's what she said or whatever that comment round up thing was for the gloriousness of this thread.
*snaps*
hush hush fizzle fizzle snap snap crack crack
*BOOM!!!!!!!!*
Seriously. I've gotten fat and lazy since they stopped doing that. Gimme positive reinforcement and I may put some effort into it.
The problem is on the WEST side of South Capitol. If you read the crime reports for this area, you will see that there are only a handful of property crimes on the EAST side of South Capitol each month, compared to hundreds of property AND violent crimes in South WEST. The problems in South WEST are very likely related to the public housing there. Remember the roving band of teenagers that beat up Justice Souter while he was jogging one evening? Yeah. If that's how they treat a Supreme Court Justice, imagine how they treat each other.
OMG THE PROBLEM IS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE CAPITOL! Gimme a break. What, are you one of those hapless denizens who bought on the east side of the Capitol? I've seen "Being There" - I know what it's like...
With all due respect, Stevie, South WEST doesn't carry the lion's share of violence in the city. You may recall David Rosenbaum who died two days after a robbery in his tony North WEST neighborhood. Your narrow minded argument against South WEST makes you sound like a Retarded Monkey. Rest assured that I'm not saying you are a Retarded Monkey, but rather you sound like a Retarded Monkey. In the same way, I may sound like Einstein, but I'm not Einstein.
