Fire in Columbia Heights

DCist is receiving reports of a fire on Irving Street near Columbia Road NW, near the Highland Park Residential Building. A staffer at Commonwealth Gastro Pub, which is housed in the building, said that an HVAC unit had caught fire. One correspondent said that he was forced to divert from his route down Irving due to all the smoke from the fire, which drew several firetrucks. Emergency officials evacuated the Highland Park building and its restaurants (including Commonwealth and Pete's Apizza). Staff at both expected that they would reopen before the start of the evening.

Was this related to the police action on Park Road tonight? Police Copter etc..?

Police told me the fire was in the alley. Someone else told me the fire was started by kids lighting fireworks.

I heard the police action on Park was due to an armed robbery down Park Rd by the zoo. In a home.

I was at the fire, it did occur in the alley. The apartment building CommonWealth is located in was evacuated. From the time the flames were reaching the trees and a police car was made aware... the DC FD arrived no more than 4 minutes later. There were 8 vehicles there within 6 minutes. Very impressive. The fire and fire crews were all cleaned up and out of there by 6pm or so.
