Last Night's Action: Denver Broom Salesmen Must Be Enthralled

Rockies 10, Nationals 4: So much for trying to salvage something from a miserable Rocky Mountain adventure -- Colorado pounded out eight extra base hits en route to a win and a sweep over the hapless Nats. For the second straight game, Washington's starter couldn't get out of the fourth inning -- yesterday, it was Ross Detwiler's turn. The 23-year-old lefty pitched adequately enough until the fifth inning, when the wheels abruptly fell off. Detwiler's rotten fifth: single, single, walk, base-clearing triple, and an early shower -- four runs, three hits, no outs recorded. Yuck. And somehow, the relief pitching and fielding were even worse than yesterday's debacle -- Adam Dunn committed two errors filling in for Nick Johnson at first, and Julian Tavarez and Ron Villone combined to allow four runs in the last three innings. Nyjer Morgan was the lone bright spot of the day: the speedy center fielder continued his hot streak with a three-for-four day. The Nats now head to Houston for a five-game set -- including a game that will start in the 11th inning -- and their last chance to grab something positive before the All-Star break.

You really going to write up every Nats game? Did you lose a bet? Prison sentance?

Hey, at least this is educational. When they suck, people don't pay attention. This forces them to. Maybe it is we who lost the bet?

I, for one, like the regular Nats updates. Even if they are depressing.

Here's the punchline...it's looking more and more as though the Nats are not going to be able to sign Strasburg because Boras is playing major hardball about his contract, and is threatening to let him play in Japan for a year. And yeah, they're in great position to draft next year's #1 overall pick Bryce Harper, and he's supposed to make more of an impact than Strasburg, since he's most likely going to be a position player...but he is also being "advised" by Scott Boras, who will certainly jack up the price even higher...so get ready for another decade of bottom feeding and sweeps at the hands of the likes of Colorado. This must be what it's like to be a Pirates fan.

As a non-expert on MLB drafting, how on earth can such a system exist where your draft picks have the ability to demand whatever they want, which essentially lets them hold the choosing team at ransom, or vetos the choice so they can go somewhere else?

Don't like it Strasburg? Suck it up, rookie, you're comin here. You can make demands after your initial contract expires. With zero experience in the pros, no player should be in a position to hold a team hostage this way and make the draft into a farce.

I'm just going to state for the record that my half-drunk coed softball team plays better than the Nationals.

I am seriously rooting against the Nats now. I mean, if we have to be the worst team in baseball, why not be the worst team in modern history? The '62 Mets are in our sights!! Come on guys, why settle for only one error per game?

We suck!! We suck!! Wow, I think I'm starting to enjoy this.
