Morning Roundup: Anyone There Edition?

Writing the Morning Roundup is always something of a pleasure, because I know that I'll be the first one to get some of our legendary commenters riled up. (After the lost-dog post earlier this week, though, I don't know how much more riled up they could get.) But today is a federal holiday and the start of a long and glorious weekend, and even some of our more prolific comment scribes may be taking some time to spend with the family, pay some bills or bathe. Which means I can say anything without consequence. All you Real World haters should lay off. I actually like the D.C. cupcake fad. The idea of 24-hour Metro is ridiculous. Heller's Bakery in Mt. Pleasant needs to make something good that's not bagels and donuts. Radiohead is just an OK band. Wonderland is still a pretty fun neighborhood bar. What you got, commenters? Have a great Fourth of July, everyone.

Fenty Not Looking So Hot These Days: The Post reports that Mayor Adrian Fenty's once bright start isn't shining as much nowadays, having been dulled by a number of missteps and mini-crises that have provoked residents to wonder whether he's still in touch with voter needs and concerns. On top of persistent fights with the D.C. Council and is secret trip to the United Arab Emirates, various residents have expressed frustration with Fenty's handling of the deadly Metro crash that left nine people dead. Fenty is up for re-election in 2010; no serious contender has yet stepped up to the plate to challenge him.

Awkward Walk-Back for Post Publisher on Salons: Yesterday wasn't what one would call a banner day for the city's paper of record. First former Post reporter and current Politico scribe Mike Allen broke the story of a flyer circulated at the paper advertising salon-style gathering at publisher Katharine Weymouth's house where anyone paying $25,000 to $250,000 could discuss the issues of the day with reporters, editors, members of Congress and Obama administration officials. By the end of the day, Weymouth had canceled the gatherings and issued a public apology for an event that seemed to be selling access to the highest bidder, a big no-no for newspapers trying to remain objective. The Post's Howard Kurtz has something on the scandal today; Politico follows up with a story of its own.

Briefly Noted: Maryland looks to crack down on cellphone use in state prisons ... D.C. officials to crack down on Fourth of July tradition -- the impromptu street fireworks shows ... How did we miss a hamburger-eating contest in the District?

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2008 we learned that journalist and friend Brian Beutler had been shot in Adams Morgan and we read a hilarious press release from Council Chair Vincent Gray. In 2007 we got a whiff of the "Corpse Plant" at the U.S. Botanical Garden.

Weymouth said the marketing flyer "was never vetted by me or by the newsroom. Had it been, the flier would have been immediately killed."

Really?

That's almost as hilarious as the statement from Rep. Cooper's lackey: "You don't want to be put in a position as a congressman where someone's buying access to you."

At least you laid off the usual guns and DC voting rights idiocies. Credit for that at least. I guess.

Yeah, cuz voting rights is, like, boring and all.

Okay, I'll bite. Although I don't have anything against cupcakes per se, other than I'm more of a pie guy myself (someone please start a mini-pie fad), I am curious as to what exactly distinguishes D.C.'s cupcake fad from the cupcake fad in every other American town large enough to support a bakery. Is it anything like D.C.'s yoga trend? Or D.C.'s new summer scarf trend? Does anybody remember D.C.'s moustache trend from the mid seventies thru mid eighties? If you weren't raised around D.C. you probably never heard of this, but there used to be a show in channel 4 called The Cosby Show and it was HUGE in D.C.

I think the difference between the D.C. cupcake trend and the Cupcake trend in other major cities (i.e. Chicago), is that the Cupcakes in those other cities are actually delicious.

Now THAT is a good idea. Screw you, pretentious tasteless velvet cupcake! Who in their right mind goes around bragging about eating red velvet, anyway??? I don't care if it's covered in cream cheese. Give me a nice, sweet peach pie, anytime.

Ugh. You know, it would be nice if the comment I just posted actually went under the guest guest comment I thought I was replying to... you know... the one about the cupcakes and the pie...

:-/

Oh, wow! There IS a DCist fairy after all! I wasn't even done complaining and it was fixed. Woohoo and a merry Fourth of July to all!

Will there be an overheard in DC post today? I'm home, getting ready to put some ribs in my smoker. And they'll be better than any ribs you can get at any local bbq joint.

Thank you, DCist. I no longer feel ashamed that I, too, think Radiohead is only an OK band. While we're letting all our skeletons out of the closet, I also don't "get" The White Stripes or Jack White in general.

I feel so much better now.

And what is up with the dweeb in the photo checking his BB in the metro station? I bet he has a KICK ME sign on his back ... or PUSH ME?

What the F is up with the rolled-up, flood-length jeans? Please don't tell me that's the new style.

It's the half assed way to keep chain grease off the outside of your jeans, for those who think rolling up just the right leg looks even dumber.

Rolled up pants are not just to keep grease off of your pants, it's to keep your pants from getting caught up in the chain or gears. I love cupcakes! and the only time I went to Wonderland, it was late on a Saturday night and too crowded to move, much less have fun. Might be fun at a non-peak time. And who cares where the Real World films? Does anyone still watch that show? I didn't know it was still on.

24-hr metro may be talking it too far, but a later close during the week and earlier open on weekends (early enough to get to the airport for a red-eye) couldn't hurt.

Dad is great! We got chocolate cake!

Since we're getting this all off our chests:

I love Lauriol Plaza. I don't care that is a little (or a lot) touristy or that lots of people go there (so in hipster terms: bad). I love their carne asada and their house salad.

I would love the cupcake trend if they weren't always so dry when I get them. I gave up and was very broke after trying many different places.

I think Sticky Fingers sucks and is way over priced for the cardboard you get. I hate how vegans are usually so whiny and have qualms with spending $3 for a gross vegan cupcake. Just go eat a piece of fruit or something.

Wonderland is still amazing. I don't care what the haters say. The beer is delicious and the crowd is either super cute/nice or super ridiculous. Either way - entertainment value!

And I thought having the movie set in Adams Morgan was FREAKING OBNOXIOUS! All the people lined up to "see" what was going on -- OBNOXIOUS!

Okay - I feel better now - time to go crawl underneath my rock again. I'll use it as shield for the inevitable hate which would be thrown against me if this were not a federal holiday.

Perhaps this is a good opportunity to start a DC vs. NYC thread? Bikes vs. cars?

I hate new york because everyone is an asshole and everyone refers to it as "the city." DC is SOOOOOO much cooler and we have a little ethiopia.

Cars suck so much because they are always all like "stupid bicyclist get off ma damn road" and then run a stop sign while eating big mac and talking on the cell phone. we should ban all cars within a 15 mile radius of the white house.

Oooohh, hopelessly subjective topics that generate acrimonious debate - my favorite! But in addition to DC vs. NYC, and bikes vs. cars, let's not forget:

-bikes vs. cars vs. pedestrians

- Maryland drivers (aka, "the devil") vs. DC drivers vs. Virginia drivers

-cool weather/winter vs. hot weather/DC summers

-PG-County-living-DC-church-attending-doubleparkers vs. hipsters living in gentrifying DC 'hoods

- etc., etc.

I grew up in the way further north which totally sucked all the time... except now, as I see that there is an inch of snow outside and all the local and further south drivers aren't handling it too well... WHAT A PERFECT TIME FOR ME TO POINT OUT HOW SUPERIOR I AM because circumstances from my past required me to be good a breaking in the snow.

HEY! we forgot whether smoking in bars/restaurants was a privilege or a right! (I know...sooooooooo three years ago).

Oh...and a recent topic, whether it is abusive/negligent/stupid to leave your dog tied up outside a store. That was a good one.

My personal problem with most cupcakes is that the frosting to cake ratio is way too high. Mini-pies are awesome and should be available everywhere.
