DCist reporter Rebecca Cooper is on the scene and said she can smell smoke outside the station, but that the area has not been evacuated. We'll update as we learn more.
UPDATE 12:05 p.m.: So far fire officials say they have found no evidence of any explosion. There was some kind of plume of smoke and several people called in reports of a loud boom. Whatever happened, it doesn't appear that any problem is happening inside the actual station. Dept. spokesperson Pete Piringer noted that there is a lot of construction in the area, though the source of the smoke and booming noise has not been determined.
12:15 p.m. Fire investigators say they determined the plume of smoke and booming noise was related to maintenance work on an emergency generator at 777 North Capitol Street NE, an office building that houses, among other things, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. The work resulted in a backfire of the generator unit which caused the noise and smoke. No injuries and no fire resulted from the incident, which is now cleared.

Morlocks
Morlocks? Puhlease, everyone knows that where there's smoke there's Ewoks.
My bad. I had some Chinese food from the Panda Express in the food court and it resulted in some digestive distress.
Well, that explains the smoke, the explosion, and the smell. But what about the fire? Was it kung pao or szechuan?
Let this be a lesson to all of us: never, ever smoke near a possible.
Also...Behold, the Underminer! I'm always beneath you, but nothing is beneath me! I hereby declare war on peace and happiness! Soon, all will tremble before me!
Man. I used to work at a generator company. When they say "no injuries" I'm sure they're not counting the years taken off the technician's life.
Ha. Had to think about that for a second, but yeah, that would freak the hell out of me.
The explosions were security guards firing off rounds across the main hall at Joe and Susie Tourist, who were taking unauthorized, illegal, unethical, immoral, and prohibited photographs of their daughter, Sally Tourist, standing by one of those statues with exposed ta-tas, thereby thwarding the evil-doers from their nefarious scheme to document...a public space. Wait, what?
Something nasty evil and wicked is coming to this town via
the underground. The tracks are being chewed on by strange beasties. The Ghost Hawks are building nests in the city.
The Morlocks and CHUDs hear it in the wind. These coming storms are just the tip of it. There be big booms from Heavens and bigger ones from below.
That's when I realized the explosion, the smell, the revolution, all had something to do with Roy Pearson's pants.
I bet it was Molly.
