251 comments later, and it appears as if closure in the case of Molly is getting closer. Molly's owners obtained surveillance photos from the Cleveland Park Petco, depicting a woman with the missing Vizsla, who was taken from in front of the Whole Foods at 14th and P on Monday night. According to Craigslist updates, Molly was seen at the pet supply store at 3505 Connecticut Avenue "[o]ne time on (6/29) Monday evening at 9pm and again this evening at 5pm." Additionally, the manager of the store "remembers the woman because she pissed her off and that she definitely appears to be a bit crazy....Petco has been authorized to hold onto Molly the next time they show up!!!" If you believe that you've seen Molly around Cleveland Park, her owners ask that you email them to take a look at the surveillance photos to see if you know the woman. [Ed. note: Many thanks to one of Molly's owners, who clarified via email that no one is sure whether the woman who was with Molly at Petco was her abductor; instead, she is simply the last person the dog has been seen with.]

Despite the shortsightedness of the owners, that IS great news. Hopefully this woman will be prosecuted fully.
I imagine that the owners will no longer be tying up Molly at any point in the future though.
It's a little histrionic to call this woman "the abductor." Plenty of stolen dogs, especially if they are valuable, are simply sold to unsuspecting people. This happened to a friend whose stolen dog was sold to a family on the Eastern Shore.
Regardless, hopefully this family will get their dog back, chip her and stop tying her up with no supervision. This isn't Mayberry.
Guilty until proven innocent is how DCist rolls...
"[...]Petco has been authorized to hold onto Molly the next time they show up!!!"
Authorized by whom? Molly's owners? The police? If I walked into a pet store with my dog and the store said they were taking my dog because she looked like someone else's dog who had negligently lost it, I don't think I'd be inclined to let them take it.
It may be the woman who is alleged to have taken Molly isn't up to date on jurisprudence.
Far more likely is that she's mentally unstable, and will cause a scene, allowing the police to show up and arrest her. Petco should be able to scan the dog's chip pretty easily to determine ownership.
I hope if the woman returns to PetCo with the dog, the manager calls the police to sort it out, and I hope the real owners microchipped their dog so ownership can be determined definitively.
Petco is stepping into risky territory though, as the woman is not suspected of stealing anything from their store. They have no grounds to detain her. If the woman turns out to simply own another Vizsla of the same coloring, they could find themselves in big trouble.
Statements from the manager that 'the woman because she pissed her off and that she definitely appears to be a bit crazy' only further Petco's precarious situation.
At least the lady isn't crazy enough to leave the dog outside the Petco.
You just make me love you with those comments!
OUCH.
Seriously? It's really necessary to add one more nasty jab since we haven't heard enough? I'm just asking you to please, please give it a rest and go find some fun elsewhere.
I am so sorry these people are being so incredibly awful to you. I, for one, am so sorry for what you've been going through. My boyfriend and I recently saw your lost sign near Whole Foods, and we've been keeping an eye out ever since.
As for the haters - maybe if dogs were allowed in these places (like they are in Europe), it would make sense for you to be this obnoxious. A lot of dogs really despise being left home alone (i know mine does), and love to help run errands because they like feeling like they're useful and part of the family. Obviously we've all learned from this, and my pup won't be tied up outside anytime soon, but being a total asshole while someone has essentially lost a child doesn't help anyone. Either have something constructive to say, or shut the hell up.
The only place with more crazies per square foot than Petco is David's Bridal. Too bad you can't leave THOSE bitches chained up in front. They'd be doing the groom a favor.

The misogyny was sufficient just the one time, thx.
You're off base. Instead of saying something useful like "hey could you stop doing [__________], please, it's demeaning and here's why" you chose to be the little andrea dworkin who cried misogyny. Not helpful. Casually throwing around the word misogyny tends to end meaningful dialog (assuming any has begun), doesn't change anyone's behavior and drains that term of its force. What's worse is that it's probably an inaccurate characterization of Monkey's comment.
Apologies if you were kidding or something, but this is a bit of a sore spot for me.
Right, because calling someone a "little Andrea Dworkin" is WAY more constructive than what she actually had to say. Thank you, o sage one, for showing us the light!
Point taken. The rest still stands, though.
I don't think you're familiar with Mr. Rotica's work. Let me introduce you to his longtime business partner, Sarcasm.
Jesus, can't people hate on idiots for being idiots anymore? Why does everything have to be deconstructed to find some racial/gender subtext? All I'm saying is that the psycho-to-normal ratio at David's Bridal is exponentially higher than what you'd find at any tuxedo establishment, and almost as high as what you'd find at Buy Buy Baby.
Also, sorry for blaspheming there. Don't want to be accused of being anti-christian or anything.
P.S.: HAIL SATAN!
Who steals a dog, honestly?
Probably the same sort of person who throws a shoe.
Probably the same sort of person who throws a shoe.
Lots of degenerates in D.C. They also steal thinks like potted plants or really, anything that isn't bolted/chained down.
Well, the postings tell us that Molly is chipped and that she has a recognizable patch of hair shaved off one of her front legs, as well as a scar on her right rear leg. I'm guessing the Petco folks have a pretty good idea it IS her.
I'm pulling for Molly's parents.
i like the doc on pic :) LOL
Molly!!
Ok, and thanks for the Petco tidbit. I guess we assume nutjobs dont read blogs, although my experience has been otherwise.
It seems to me that running this story is counter-productive. I'm not sure it makes sense to be publicizing that PetCo is looking out for the women. If the women who took the dog sees this article or any similiar to this, dont you think she will know better than to go back to PetCo with the dog. I think DCist should have thought twice before publicizing this information. Perhaps it would have made more sense to say the part of town where the dog was spotted to alert residents to look out for the dog, but not to get into the specifics of the PetCo part.
Perhaps it would have made more sense if Dcist had never posted the first story.
Dcist, please let us know when the dog has been found dead or alive...otherwise I'll keep lathering my penaut butter anticipating Molly's return. It's been a long week without her.
So long in fact that I have forgotten how to spell peanut butter and to capitalize DC in DCist!
I AM SO SORRY!! I pet your dog all the time as I live on the block and see you guys around often. What a sweet, wonderful dog. As a Viszla owner I can say that if they get loose (and scared) they can run for miles. However, mine DID come back! If someone stole Molly, I think that says some absolutely terrible things about DC.
Just awful. My heart is with you, keep us all posted.
Also- I hate to say this, but did you check Craigslist? There is a lost and found, but if someone is actually trying to sell your dog for $ or as a show dog they are
a) probably within the DC/MD/VA area, within a 10 mile range of the PetCo
b) not very knowledgable about showing dogs, because you have to train showdogs from a very early age and Molly is obviously not a puppy
c) not very bright because they didn't pre-buy dog food etc. Also, they went to PetCo.. a place likely to have people looking for them
d) in disparate need of money- because who steals a DOG. This is not a car, which you can strip for parts, a bike which you can resell, this is a specialty item that has value pretty much only to the owner, or, to someone looking for that breed
I actually think the following happened:
Some unsavory character saw Molly and let her off leash (probably one of those people who thinks that pet owners who leave their dogs on the street deserve to lose them) and Molly got scared away. Someone probably found her and headed to PetCo to buy some food, and doesn't know what to do with her.
I hope!
FYI, microchipping in ineffective unless a vet or shelter physically scans the dog then contacts the owner. It is not like a GPS tracking system. No need to criticize Molly's owners for not having a microchip because that does not guarantee a safe return. Still a good thing to have for your pet, though.
oh, and last time I checked, a dog is an animal. you may want to wiki it to be sure that it hasn't been confused with a baby/toddler/bike.
