Senate Spending Bill Includes Money for Metro

One more hurdle cleared toward getting dedicated funding for Metro. The Senate Appropriations Committee went ahead and included $150 million for Metro in a FY2010 spending bill, the Post reports. Last year, Congress approved $1.5 billion over 10 years for Metro, with the caveat that D.C., Virginia, and Maryland all provided matching funds - something each jurisdiction already agreed to do. The House already approved its own spending bill that includes the money, which was not originally included in President Obama's budget. The Senate still needs to vote on the bill, and the president has to sign it, before Metro actually gets a check.

Yay! That should be enough to make a down payment on that elevator repair in Woodley Park and send the entire Metro Board to Cancun, Bora Bora, and Tahiti to study how they deal with mass transit issues.

Metro sucks. We pay more than San Francisco, Chicago, and NYC during rush hour for inferior service and lower quality trains.

In regards to SF and Chicago, if by pay more you mean we usually pay less, you'd be correct.

$1.75 minimum.
as much as $10.90 for really long distances

Oh, and Chicago's cash fare is $2.25

(that first link is for BART)

And the fare in NY is $2.25. And if you're going so far that you're paying over $4 on Metro in DC, you should probably be comparing the fare to the LIRR or Metro North, both of which start at around $5.

(I'm not disagreeing that Metro sucks. Just not on cost.)

Won't all that just go directly to the lawyers suing over the metro crash?

Good for the Senate. If they're going to spend another $2 billion to encourage people to buy new cars, a few hundred million to subsidize the most fuel-efficient means of travel only seems fair.
