After heated words were exchanged, Kendrick and Paes finally shook hands. (Kyle Gustafson / www.photokyle.com)
The Washington Kastles tennis match last night against the New York Sportimes was surprisingly not sold out, but did come with everything you would expect from a match featuring John McEnroe.
In men's doubles, the Kastles had Scott Oudesma and Leander Paes on the court against McEnroe and Robert Kendrick. During that match, though, it was Mac's teammate who went a little crazy (although Johnny was never too far from the action). Paes accidentally hit Kendrick in the back with a ball; this set off Kendrick and McEnroe and led them to cross over onto the Kastles side of the court and get in Paes' face.
But that was just the beginning of the tension.
It was Kendrick's next serve which really was the match that lit the fuse. With Paes in front of the net, Kendrick -- intentions clear as day -- hit Paes on his upper left arm; Kendrick then did the classic move of pulling his arms up by his waist, palms facing the sky, to shrug it off and suggest "I didn't mean to."
Uh-huh, right.
The match was delayed a few minutes, the crowd appalled at Kendrick's extremely poor sportsmanship. But hey, there's no fistfighting in Party Tennis: Kendrick and Paes eventually shook hands and the set went on as planned. Unfortunately for the Kastles, Paes seemed to be a little too worked up and on edge after the fracas, and couldn't keep his balls inside the lines -- surely costing the Kastles a couple of points which would have really come in handy, seeing as how they ended up losing by one. Johnny Mac -- whom the owner of the Sportimes called "an oasis of calm in the chaos" (feel free to stifle those snickers) -- also came up big in men's singles, absolutely undressing Oudesma.
The loss snaps the Kastles' five-game winning streak, and bumps them back down to .500.
The Kastles play three more home matches this month (July 21, 22 and 26). Group tickets can be purchased in groups of four for $99, or single tickets starting at $30.

I have to ask this: Was Kyle on a different rotational axis than the rest of the earth? Why are all these shots off-kilter. I mean I get it for one or two shots, but half the shots look like they were taken by someone who wasn't attracted to the gravitational pull of the earth.
Pics looks fine to me. What's your problem, fafou?
Duly noted. I was just trying to do something different.
Speaking of gravity, most of his subjects are airborne, so the dutch angles add to the weightless feeling.
Mac is obviously the latest Batman villain.
FYI-this is known as a "Dutch Angle" (no relation to the Dutch Oven)
I admit to not really understand the format of these matches. How long does a match last, and is it worth thirty bucks?
They basically play five different five game sets (mens and womens singles & doubles + mixed doubles) and matches last around 3 hours each.
mac is starting to resemble norman mailer god rest his soul
So how does this work exactly? Are the arguments real or is this some sort of scripted WWE-esqe stunt to get 20 seconds on SportsCenter?
Also, good luck to Mr. Paes on keeping his balls within the lines. There are few things worse than roaming balls.
I don't think this post gets at just how ugly the incident with Kendrick was. It was after McEnroe's over the top whining about Kendrick being hit by the ball (in what any tennis player would see as a clean play) that Kendrick deliberately beaned Paes. Total dick move and more than a little hypocritical after the complaints about being hit two points earlier. To top it off, after the match when McEnroe was asked about the incident, he ignored the questioned and then dissed the DC fans. Please show up and heckle the sportimes. Tickets reduced to $25 and drink specials for the match.
