105.9 FM Switches from Oldies Format to Classic Rock

2009_0826_theedge.jpg Another local radio format switch to announce. True Oldies 105.9 FM is no more, having been replaced this morning by 105.9 The Edge, a new classic rock station. The Edge is touting itself as "specifically designed for men who love to rock," because, we can only guess, women don't enjoy rocking quite so hard? Look for the likes of Van Halen, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Queen, The Black Crowes, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, etc.

Plans are afoot to broadcast True Oldies programming on WJZW's third HD Radio channel (the second one already offers smooth jazz), but this change appears to create a rather large oldies hole in the area's regular FM radio options. BIG 100.3 plays a tiny bit of oldies mixed in with its classic rock, but that's pretty much it, if we're not mistaken.

This is a huge disappointment. Big 100 is an awful station with almost no oldies, and the ones they play are horrid. 105.9 actually played a good selection of oldies, I'm sad to see it go.

I'm a woman and I like to rock, but I would prefer to keep the best area oldies station what it is.

"The Switch and Bait!"

"So, how many classical KVOD listeners are going to heed his advice '... not to run out and buy an HD Radio thinking that will fix things,' and '... to encourage them to stop donations to Colorado Public Radio until this situation improves?' Makes you wonder why didn't Colorado Public Radio executives just come clean with listeners in the first place? Instead, they hoped to persuade you with wiggly advice like this."

This is called the HD Radio switch-and-bait, trying to force listeners to buy cheesy HD radios that don't work.

Good gods, how many classic rock stations does this area need? I mean really?!?! I was just thinking there was no where near enough Pink Floyd being played at all hours of the day.

Grr. Guess I'm back to all NPR, all the time. Plus occasional 80s from the Jack.

Sorry babes, but DC radio died a long time ago. Sounds like it just went from one shade of gray to another. Net zero difference.

105.9 was a classic rock station in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

WCXR 105.9

It looks like the powers that be dissed the oldies lovers again...first 100.3 now 105.9. We don't need another DC101 want-to-be. Didn't they learn when 94.7 flamed out and turned into a Mix 107.3 clone? It's great that true oldies went HD or whatever, but believe it or not, not everyone has those radios in their vehicles. To whatever "suit" that made the decision to change, congratulations...you just lost a loyal listener for life!!!

Too, too bad that the "suits" decided that oldies don't cut it anymore. Someone should tell them to check out YouTube and see how many current movies feature oldies throughout the films--not to mention the thousands of young musicians who use bits and pieces of oldies in their music. Clearly, today's young people appreciate "old school" music. Too bad the "suits" don't!!

More important that the format change from Oldies Rock to Classic Rock.......THEY got rid of IMUS in the Morning. YIKES! You farging icehole bastages!!!

goddamn! radio is dc is the pits. makes me want to move to new jersey. and who wants that!

Pearl Jam? Really? Is that what we're considering classic rock these days?

Pearl Jam is classic rock? Oh man I must be getting old...

Why did you ruin a great station?
