You've probably noticed the ongoing construction surrounding the Chinatown Archway at H and 7 Streets NW. The Archway itself has been covered up for several weeks, and the renovation work is expected to wrap up before the end of August. In order to complete the construction, DDOT plans to close H Street entirely between 6th and 7th Streets NW overnight tonight. The 600 block of H Street will be closed from midnight until to approximately 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning while crews move large equipment needed for the renovations into place. Drivers are instructed to follow posted signs, and use F Street or I Street to detour around the area.

I can't wait till this project is done, but it will be worth it. It's going to look so much better with those enormous flat panel TVs hanging on it.
Holy crapballs. Do you have any idea what closing part of H Street is going to do to that area that is already an insane clusterf*ck?!
It's just midnight to 5 a.m. on a Tuesday. It shouldn't be too bad.
Oh, whoops!! Thanks for the clarification. My brain read that as 5 p.m. for some reason.
Cue GreaterGreaterWashington blog post about how they should make the shut down of traffic permanent.
Didn't they "renovate" it just a few years ago?
Isn't it called the Friendship Arch?
So what are they going to renovate about it anyway?
They're adding enormous Chinese flat panel TVs to it, to display advertising and tourist information.
You gotta be kidding me! That intersection is infested with people at every corner trying to cross at every angle in addition to car traffic. Putting flat panels will create more traffic and definitely more accidents. It's not even Chinatown anymore so they might as well get rid of that arch.
I think the panels are a good idea. After all, it's not like there are a lot of chinese restaurants there any more. And the arch is nice, but kind of old fashioned.
the paint and gilding were peeling off. some cracked wood.
Speaking of closures, DDOT has closed the northbound portion of the Eye Street spur that branches off of Massachusetts across 5th Street (in front of the Meridian). They painted the area with white stripes a while ago, and now (i.e., sometime on Wednesday) they've put a "DO NOT ENTER" sign blocking access from Mass. and pylons covering the rest. What a monumental disaster this will be, but I'm hoping it's just temporary.
