We've been eagerly awaiting the opening of Room 11 Wine and Dessert Bar in Columbia Heights for some time now, and tracking their progress on their blog. The bar is situated on the corner of 11th and Lamont Streets NW and features an outdoor patio. The owners held a soft opening last night for media and friends of the bar, with the official opening set for August 10. Room 11 is the brain child of a collection of 20 investors with strong ties in the D.C. arts, music, and food communities. The decor represents those affiliations with art work and various knick knacks, like popover pans.
Bar manager Dan Searing previously was in charge of the bar at Looking Glass Lounge. More recently he was the mixing brains behind the Punch Club event held sporadically at the Warehouse Theater, which served as a testing ground for some Room 11 concepts. Searing is mixing up a list of six cocktails with a variety of liquors that include whisky, applejack, brandy, rum, pisco and gin. He also plans to institute a weekly Punch Club at Room 11 once things get settled.
The wine list is a mix of Old and New World wines, and includes sparklers and dessert wines. The glasses start at $6 and top off at $12 a glass with several wines fall in between. There's definitely a little something for everyone, and are relatively easy on the pocket. And for beer lovers there are also excellent options You won't find anything resembling PBR or Yuengling here with Brooklyn Pils and Victory Hop Devil on tap as well as Old World beers like De Koninck Belgian Ale, Orval Trappist Ale, and Rasputin Imperial Stout.
Ben Gilligan is in charge of food. If his stint at Punch Club, where his only appliances were a panini press and a hot plate, is any indication, the food will be simple, but excellent. A quick perusal shows the usual cheese and charcuterie of most local wine bars, but priced at an affordable $3 each or $13 for a selection of three. Also on the menu are paninis that come with a side salad ($10), some small bites similar to what we've seen on the menu at Cork ($4-10), soups and salads ($6-8). The fare may be simple, but it is more than fairly priced for a DC-area wine bar, and looks to pair really well with the selections.
Room 11 should be a great place for anyone looking for a comfortable place to hang out and a more classy option for its neighbors in Columbia Heights.

Them goat cheesecake balls are callin' me...
Er... Paul Ruppert is pictured in the final picture (wearing an orange t-shirt) and not the fellow shown holding the beer tap.
Yeah the artwork is by Nick Pimentel, though that is indeed Paul in the photo. I've updated the caption for the sake of clarity.
Hope they have somewhere to tie up dogs outside.
That neighbhorhood is dying for a decent Yappy Hour spot. They also could use a few more dognappings. P Street is making them look bad.
Nice. Might be worth getting a sitter for a few hours.
Wait, what? No comments on the proposed "punch club?" There's got to be some sort of tradmark violation going on there...
Unless it's a Cockpunch Club or Junkpunch Club or Nunpunch Club, don't bother me.
"Apothecary jars." I assume you mean "large mason jars." I understand the need to try to make the place sound swanky/trendy/etc, but c'mon. That's just silly. Looks to me like some under-decorated shelves in a to-be-completed neighborhood wine bar. Just sayin'
look like ikea jars to me.
