That's according to the Washington Business Journal, which reports that Madison Square Garden LP is looking for a space to open up a rather large new theater in the District. At least one source of the BizJo's puts the size the potential venue at "6,000 seats or more, requiring up to 100,000 square feet," which, just for comparison's sake, would make it almost twice the size of DAR Constitution Hall. Steve Moore, executive director of the Washington, D.C. Economic Partnership, told the paper that he has been pitching the company on sites near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and in the area around Nationals Park. Can you think of any other locations something that big would fit in, that's also close enough to Metro?

Instead of building a new one, they should just restore the Howard and Dunbar theaters.
How big is that lot between 3rd & 4th on H St. NE?
Howard and Dunbar aren't that large. Although I certainly wish they would finally be renovated.
Also, what ever happened to the House of Blues idea? Wasn't that going to move in to the Penn Quarter?
Yeah- when I saw this reminded me of the would-be House of Blues buzz near the new convention center from a couple years ago. Pretty sure that's long dead as there's been nothing new in some time
maybe they could call this one 'madison square garden EP' to go with the long-play you're talking about from up there in NYC :P
How about the old Uline Stadium? Home of the first US Beatles concert.
thats where my head was at as well. According to DC Preservation League it seats/sat 9,000 people when it used to be in operation. Hopefully they are talking to Mr. Jemal.

That'd be brilliant if they could figure out how to make it coexist with housing. Jemal bought that site assuming he could incorporate the existing structure into something with housing built over the structure.
If they could do that and have an arena there that'd seem to be a pretty good fit, and would fit in very well with the H St NE as entertainment destination idea.
But would people want to live above an arena? I'd say yes, if there were no serious crowd control / noise issues.
Jamal owns DC Armory?
It's a Washington clone of the WaMu Theatre, which is attached to MSG (it's used for concerts where you'd otherwise curtain off half of the arena, big shows during the holidays, and the NBA Draft, among other things). What's going in that slot where Bolt Bus drops off?
They could just knock down Union Station and put a venue on top of what's left.
Other than that, though, what about that place on the Anacostia where D.C. United was thinking about building a stadium?
We don't need this. What are they thinking?
How about right by Eastern Market Metro, on the site of that abandoned DC school/vacant lot/space where the temporary building Eastern Market was located in during reconstruction?
The old Hine Jr High site is already being fiercely fought over by several developers, who have already submitted site plans for review. I doubt residents there would be keen on a huge arena going in.
Accurate assessment, but (if they could deal with the parking issue) it might not be the worst thing that could go in that spot.
In philly.
What about those empty lots directly east of Mt. Vernon Square?
How about at the end zone of the new United Stadium at Poplar Point?
Maybe they can renovate the Lincoln Theater on U St! - oh no, no wait, that's already been done...
We have enough venues for shows. If you build larger, we'll see less multiday runs at 930, RnR, etc. It's not like we get passed over for lack of space. Merriweather has like 8000 seats, -lawn.
Near the convention center would be great!
That said, I can see this being a good anchor for the area around the stadium or southwest waterfront redevelopment.
Why don't they put it inside the DC Armory - you know, that 10,000 seat multi-purpose venue near metro?
near Benning Road or capitol heights.
if anywhere in dc needs near entertainment venues, east of the river does.
or if not, how about the parking lots at RFK.
NoVa, but not in my back yard.
What about the old Convention Center space?
