>> While not as well known as his legendary brother, Nat "King" Cole, pianist/vocalist Freddy Cole is a respected and accomplished musician who has been on the scene since the 1950s. Cole will be playing 8 and 10 p.m. sets from Thursday through Sunday at Blues Alley. Tickets are $25 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
>> The trombone/saxophone duo of Jen Krupa and Leigh Pilzer lead their quintet, JLQ, this Friday at Jazz in the Garden. 5 to 8:30 p.m. Free.
>> The Saltman Knowles Quintet, regulars on the local scene, will be playing on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5
>> Jazz-funksters Mojai return to Iota this Friday after an extended hiatus. The band features Three Stars alum John Lee on guitar and Le Loup bassist Dan Ryan. 9 p.m. $10
>> Allyn Johnson is one of the area's first rate pianists, and is probably best known for his work as director of UDC's jazz program or with Three Stars alums The Young Lions. He leads his other group, Divine Order, this Friday and Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. The lineup varies, and can include strings and chorus. Tickets to the 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets are $15.
>> DCist fave and Three Stars alum Thad Wilson leads a quartet this Friday and Saturday at HR-57. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $12
>> Baltimore native Kevin Robinson leads his group, KREation, this Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz. The septet plays an eclectic mix of music, ranging from standards to free jazz, and often collaborates with visual artists during its performances. Tickets to the 9 and 11 p.m. sets are $15.
>> Led by drummer Tosin Aribisala, The Hallelujazz Project combines the traditional music of West Africa with contemporary jazz. They'll be playing the Millennium Stage on Sunday. 6 p.m. Free
>> Local guitarist Rodney Richardson, a graduate of Ellington and Howard, recently formed a trio with Three Stars alum Will Rast and drummer Larry Ferguson. The trio will make its Blues Alley debut on Monday. Tickets to the 8 and 10 p.m. sets are $18 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.
