D.C. Fire/EMS crews were dispatched at around noon to the 5000 block of Glover Road NW in Rock Creek Park, for a report of multiple bee stings. According to Fire/EMS spokesperson Pete Piringer, a tour group going through the park came across a bee hive, the bees became agitated somehow, and a total of eight people, both adults and children, were stung multiple times. Two children were taken to Children's Hospital, while six others were well enough to skip the ambulance trip. The condition of the two children at the hospital is described as not serious, but they did receive multiple bee stings. No word on how many total people were in the tour group, but it seems fair to guess that nearly all of them will come away with a lifetime fear of bees. Shudder.
UPDATE 2:59 p.m.: More details now available. It does appear that the insects in question were in fact yellow jackets, and not bees. The Post also reports that the tour group was made up of private school students from St. Stephen's & St. Agnes in Alexandria, who were visiting the Rock Creek Park Nature Center.
The group, led by park rangers, was warned before their tour that wasps nested in rotting and felled trees close to the ground, so they should not wander from the trail, Line said. But apparently some students did not heed those instructions.

D.C. Unemployment Rate Reaches 11.9 Percent

Presuming that no one dies from a reaction, this is fairly awesome.
Especially because someone in the group probably instigated it.
They DID NOT HEED THOSE INSTRUCTIONS! Learned that listen, I'll bet! The little f*ers.
I knew this would happen after Congress passed that stupid Bees in National Parks legislation.
Wake me when they transport someone for a box turtle bite.
UPDATE: On the way to the hospital, the group came across a hive of youths in Mt. Pleasant. The youths somehow became agitated and 6 adults and 2 children were stung by rocks.
Hey get your neighborhoods or launching items straight. The Youth in Columbia Heights throw rocks. The Youth in Mount Pleasant either throw hot lattes or organic milk boxes depending on their age.
You are correct. I apologize to the latte throwers.
Why were those bees left unattended outside?
Molly!
I'm guessing the bit where "the bees became agitated somehow" had something to do with one of the children and a stick.
Oh sure. Blame the victim!!! Were they wearing headphones? You know 90% of bee attacks happen to people wearing headphones because they can't hear them coming.
Meh, I got attacked by bees in 4th grade on a school trip and managed to escape relatively unscathed. Aside from, of course, the fact that I wake up every night weeping after loud buzzing noises haunt my dreams. You know what they say. Kids are resilient.
Sounds more like Yellow Jackets, which are wasps, not bees. And nasty. They used to nail us at the summer camp where I worked ... you'd be walking along with a group of kids, and the back of the line would get stung. The hives are often in the ground near the trail, so it is easy to inadvertently get them upset.
100% agree!
TO THE BEEMOBILE!
According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. It's wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway, because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.
Beads?
A more important (but not local) story is Les Paul died today at 94.

Dammit! Beat me to it.
bwhahahaha my clan of trained attack bees have dealt their first blow to those pesky tourists!
Don't you mean the dogs with bees in their mouths and when they bark they shoot bees at you?
my training hasn't quite made it to that level yet. but there are plans in the works...
The funny this is all of the bees involved came from perfectly good, nice hives around the country and moved D.C. after college for government jobs. Unfortunately, after they moved here they became Washingtonized... which is sort of like becoming Africanized, only more smug.
Somebody needs to make a movie about this. Oh wait, they already did.
Wu-Tang Clan ain't nuthing ta f**k wit.
My dad used to put a sign in the azalea garden next to our driveway: Don't Bug the Bees!
Does this stinger make my ass look big?
No, but all of that honey you eat does!
Was the tour group wearing headphones?
Did the bees have a relationship with Sen. Ensign?
Were the bees held for questioning in the Chandra Levy slaying??
Were they texting?
Or sexting?
The only thing that could make this story better is if the tour group were all on Segways.
Or texting on Segways.
I would have paid to see that video
Beestung Sexting Segway Riders in Heat is now available for download from better torrent sites everywhere. Unfortunately, it consists mostly of cosplay perverts in bee costumes with deely bobbers covered head to toe in goo. More power to you if you can jerk off to this stuff, but I still say it's a shameless ripoff of Bee Bukkake Hiking Trail Slutz.
They were probably wearing headphones. Do not wear headphones when riding tour buses in Rock Creek Park
damn. you beat me to the headphone comment
Not good, I was there, and it was pretty scary at first.
