Weekly Music Agenda

The Flaming Lips are at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Friday.
MONDAY
>> Justin Moyer performs as his alter-ego, Edie Sedgwick, tonight. The Three Stars alum's shows are unusual to say the least, but also interesting: the Black Cat described her as "Le Tigre meets Black Flag for an irony-free dance party with a tranny Milton Berle as MC!" 9 p.m., $8.

TUESDAY
>> The Black Crowes are still kicking out the blues, covering older songs and writing their own could-be-cover new ones. They're at Wolf Trap's Filene Center with openers Truth & Salvage Company, described as the "authentic sound of classic American rock ’n’ roll." 8 p.m., $25/$42.

WEDNESDAY
>> Former members of two drummer, two guitarist cult faves Hockey Night form Free Energy, who are playing at the Black Cat's Backstage tonight. They're signed to DFA, but rather than cowbells and dance punk, they play sunny guitar rock. They're joined by Bear in Heaven and Buildings. 8 p.m., $10.

>>If you prefer another kind of sunny, check out Loggins and Messina at Wolf Trap. We're guessing they'll play "Your Mama Don't Dance," plus maybe Loggins solo hits like "Footloose" and "Danger Zone." Shirtless volleyball and Kevin Bacon probably not included. Gabe Dixon Band opens. 8 p.m., $30/$42

THURSDAY
>> Former Aloha and White Williams drummer Cale Parks has his own solo career now, and he's playing at Comet Ping Pong tonight. He plays almost-ambient electronic music with keyboards and electronic drums, plus mallet percussion. Sounds like a good accompaniment to a pie. And Gothamist likes him, too. Lemonade opens. 9 p.m., $10

>> It's a Three Stars supershow at the Black Cat's Backstage, with True Womanhood playing noodley, experimental rock and fellow Three Stars alum Deleted Scenes, whose album we liked: "it's shocking this band isn't huge." Savoir Adore also open. 9 p.m., $10

>> Bluegrass! Sova on H Street NE hosts Extension Agents tonight (and every other Thursday), followed by an old timey jam session for all comers.

>> Remember the 1990s? Do you like to come on and shine? Then Collective Soul at the 9:30 Club might be up your alley. Black Stone Cherry and SafetySuit open. 7 p.m., $25.

FRIDAY
>>It's going to be a big, blissful evening at Merriweather Post Pavilion when The Flaming Lips play, accompanied by "post rock" (i.e. instrumental and big-sounding) Explosions in the Sky and Stardeath and White Dwarfs, who are headed by Lips' front man Wayne Coyne's nephew. The Lips' Earth Day show on the Mall was very fun, so imagine it at a big venue that's designed for music. 6 p.m. doors, $40 Pavilion / $30 Lawn.

SATURDAY
>>Surprisingly, The Hold Steady have not yet sold out the 9:30 Club on Saturday. The literate rockers are one of those love them or hate them bands: they have a very passionate fan base (their own wiki, for example), but some folks can't stand Craig Finn's speak-singing. However, we think there's more of the former than the latter. 6:30 p.m., $25.

>> It's no secret that DCist likes These United States. Find out why at the Black Cat, along with alt-countryish Hoots & Hellmouth. 9 p.m., $10/$12.

SUNDAY:
>>If you haven't gotten your ticket for the Virgin Mobile Freefest already, better check out Craiglist -- it's sold out. How much is a free ticket worth anyway? If you do get there, expect big crowds and tons of bands: Public Enemy, Franz Ferdiand, The Bravery, Blink-182, etc etc. 11 a.m. doors.
