The arts season kicks itself into high gear this weekend. There's enough happening to keep your art plate full, with plenty of seconds.

Thursday
>> Brenda Barthell’s Solo Show at The Art League, The Special Relationship, opens tonight with a reception from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

>> It's Second Thursday Art Night: Art is Everywhere at the Torpedo Factory. 6 to 9 p.m.

>> Arts on Foot kicks off today with an art market from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and then kicks into high gear with the full festival Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday
>> See the work of the winners of the The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards at the Fraser Gallery. 6 to 9 p.m.

>> Civilian Arts Project opens two shows tonight including Cara Ober's Love Letters and Nikki Painter's Debriscapes. Opening reception 7 to 9 p.m.

>> 18 Mammals opens at Carroll Square. Reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

>> The Gallery at Flashpoint holds an opening reception for Visions from the End of the World from 6 to 8 p.m.

>> 6 p.m. at the Katzen Arts Center join a gallery talk with Jonathan Bucci, curator, Ron Haynie: Playing with Light

>> Reyes+Davis Independent Exhibitions opens an exhibition of artwork by gallery artists Jeff Huntington, Pepa Leon, Johanna Mueller, and Hamiltonian Fellow Michael Enn Sirvet. 6:30 to 9 p.m.

>> Touchstone Gallery holds an opening reception for Mirage Series and Color, Texture and Mood. 6 to 8:30 p.m.

>> FALL SOLOS 2009 at the Arlington Arts Center opens with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m.

>> Susan Calloway Fine Arts shows recent work by Caroline Adams. 6 to 8 p.m.

>> Phil Wiggins of the Piedmont Blues will perform at Honfleur Gallery at 7 p.m. $10

>> Caos on F presents Sheila Crider in re:construction. Opening reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

>> Neptune Gallery opens work by Matthew Lawrence. 6 to 9 p.m.

>> The Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery opens No Dream Beyond Reach. 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Saturday

>> The Curator's Office presents Slow Food, work by Patrick Wilson at an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

>> Hemphill Fine Arts presents Enigma with a public reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

>> Join Ten Miles Square and the work of Pat Padua and Jennifer Wade in Microscopy at Hounshell (1506 14th Street NW) this Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

>> The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop presents a family-friendly Celebration of the Arts from 3 to 5 p.m. which will feature the opening of Windows on the Hill: Ten Years of Children’s Photographs at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop.

>> The Smithsonian kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month with a Family Day Celebration at the National Portrait Gallery from 1 to 5 p.m.

>> The Gallery at Convergence hosts Art in Autumn a Fine Arts & Crafts Sale. 1 to 6 p.m.

>> The 7th annual Alexandria Festival of the Arts will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

>> In the Abramson Family Recital Hall at the Katzen Arts Center, participate in a gallery talk with Brenda Croft, curator, Australian Indigenous Art Triennial: Culture Warriors 4:30 p.m.

>> New Realisms opens at Irvine Contemporary with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gallery and a panel discussion from 2 to 3 p.m. at Georgetown University.

>> Africa Live! Community Day at the National Museum of African Art takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Sunday

>> Paint Made Flesh at the Phillips Collection, closes today. $12

>> Also at the Phillips Collection hear Faith Ringold in a lecture on the American Quilt. 3 to 5 p.m. RSVP to 202.724.5613

>> The Dennis and Phillip Ratner Museum hosts an artist reception for September Splendor from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

>> The fifth annual Metamorphosis Art Show will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Willow Restaurant.

Y'know what I love about these portraits? They remind me of the ones in The Night Gallery.
