Bike DC Set for October 17

2009_0921_bikedc.jpg With Car Free Day coming up tomorrow, it's as good a time as ever to remind everyone of another two-wheeled celebration -- Bike DC. The October 17 event will feature two routes -- the 25-mile Capital Ride and the 12-mile Family Ride -- that weave their way through parts of the District and Arlington, including a stretch on the George Washington Parkway.

There is one catch that might make the rides a little longer for everyone, though -- the start and finish lines aren't in the same place. According to a FAQ posted by organizers, the event was only permitted to shut down one bridge, so all riders will start in Washington and end up in Crystal City. At that point, I'd encourage either taking the Mt. Vernon Trail back into the city or just taking advantage of strength in numbers and turning the event into an impromptu Critical Mass ride. It's never too early to start teaching kids about subverting car culture, is it? Registration costs $35 for adults ($45 for same-day) for the Capital Ride and $25 for adults ($35 for same-day) for the Family Ride. Kids under 15 ride free. You can register here.

you know how you used to be able to select "full" or "summary" view on the main dcist page?

am i the only person who can't get "full" view for the life of me? no matter which i choose, i get "summary," which i just can't stand...

It's the same for me, but I guess I never knew there was an option, so it didn't bother me. Is it a Mac thing?

I have the same problem, and no, it's not a Mac thing, as I have both a PC here.

follow-up: sommer says that the gothamist folks are working on it. they have some other server issues as well.

Hell, I don't even own a car, but I'm renting one to take advantage of all the open streets and easy parking!!

In opposition to Martin's calling for an illegal Biker Critical Action to shut down DC's roads, I propose a counter, Motorist Critical Action protest.

Here is the idea. We encourage everyone to drive their cars on the beltway from 8:30-9:00 AM on a Monday and bring the motherf*cker to a standstill!!!!

Oh, wait....

Wait, what? Martin now wants to take my Vee-hih-cul away? When will the insanity end?

First they came for the gun owners, and I did not speak out—because I was not a gun owner; Then they came for the automobile owners, and I did not speak out—because I did not drive a car; Then they came for the Jumbo Slice eaters, and I did not speak out—because I did not eat Jumbo Slices; Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me."

well, technically, there were still people left. they were just glad to see you go ;)
