Harris Teeter Looking at The Yards

2009_0909_harristeeter.jpg We missed this one from the Washington Business Journal earlier this week: Harris Teeter is looking at a fourth location in the District, this time at the mixed-use Capitol Riverfront development The Yards, nearby Nationals Park. The lease has yet to be signed and the BizJo estimates it would take at least three years before the store could open thanks to the current financing market, but word of a grocery store coming to the area understandably elicits breathless comments from neighborhood officials. '“We're thrilled there's going to be a Harris Teeter in the neighborhood,” said Michael Stevens, director of the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District ... “They all bought into the vision of the neighborhood and a grocery store is part of that vision,” he said.'

With the Teeter at Potomac Avenue, they're starting to lock up Southeast. Maybe at some point, they'll make the jump to Ward 8 where there aren't any grocery stores AT ALL.

Gotta hand it to a store that carries Robinson's Lemon Barley Water. That $h!t is whack, yo. Throw in a little Remy Martin and get your drank on. Peace, we outta here.

bzzzt! sorry, thanks for playing. there is that new giant at the old camp simms on alabama ave.

The Southeast is gonna have one sweet pair of Harris Teets. Oh baby.

If I'm not mistaken, they've been planning on opening a location in that neighborhood for a couple years.

yeah, the same michael stevens led a tour through the yards (co-sponsored with the center for smart growth) last year that i went on, and he mentioned the HT then...guess it's news because the news agencies have picked it up...

Thaaaat's myyyy Hairrry Peeeter.

While they're at it could they please replace the Safeway next to Waterfront? The sushi there is about as close as I have ever come to death.

already under construction, didn't you notice all the work being done around there?

Won't make a difference if they replace the building and keep the same management. That safeway has the longest, slowest lines in the city; I've waited 45 minutes just to buy a loaf of bread there, which is about as long as it would take me to just bake the damn thing myself. And it's always like that.

For shits and giggles we could ask Whole Foods or Wegemans to come to that location (hell I'd even take a Giant)...whats a little competition? And oh yeah, a place that sells beer. Humping it to that liquor store near 7-11 when you've run out of beer/rum at 10pm is not fun.

As someone who lives between a Safeway and a Teeter, I've seen the same thing. Safeway remodeled when Teeter opened. Teeter has about 10 more lines open at any moment, hardly ever a line. Safeway is hell, but I'd also guess it's about 20% cheaper than Harris Teeter - so there are down sides to both. Sometimes I pay the convenience fee and enjoy a trip to Teeter.

FWIW, DC Metrocentric said they just got confirmation.

And a warning about Harris Teeter. If you go in with a hangover or sleepy-eyed, their bright lights will give you a serious eye-hit....

But if you walk into their bakery with a hangover - you'll be happy soon after. Their breads and pies are well above average for a grocery store. The South is friendly to the hangover.

Now how about a Harris Teeter vs. Safeway debate. 3-2-1..GO!

I love Harris Teeter! Safeway can suck it!

I exist on a diet of Pringles and Diet Crystal Light, so the quality issue does not affect me.

The dumpy Giant near me recently remodeled, and I'm sure it has to be due to a newish Harris Teeter less than 1 mi away.

It's all lipstick on a pig though. Same lousy employees, same stupid self-checkout lanes, although they are quicker. I actually was in the store several weeks ago on a Sunday night. I did not realize they closed at 10. I must have gotten in just before 10. There were contractors there stocking the frozen, and construction workers running about.

I got to the self checkout, started checking my groceries, then naturally something didn't scan right so I got the "wait for assistance" message. Looked around and didn't see anybody. Then a security guy comes around and says the store is closed.

Nobody turned me away, there was no PA announcement saying the store was closing "please bring all final purchases to the front and thank you for shopping at Giant". Nothing. Walked around looking for an employee or manager. Nothing. So I just left my groceries at the register and walked out.
