Metro Board Renews Catoe's Contract

2009_0924_catoe.jpg Metro's board of directors voted to renew General Manager John Catoe's contract for another three years at their meeting today, the Post is reporting. Presumably they managed to come to that decision before board chairman Jim Graham was pulled out of the meeting to deal with the fact that his chief of staff had been arrested. WTOP says the only vote against Catoe came from City Administrator Neil Albert. Catoe's annual salary of $315,000 will remain the same, according to WTOP.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ on a freaking cracker, what kind of pictures of the Metro BoD does Catoe have? Or to put it in l33t:

OMG, WTF WMATA?! W. T. F.???!!1!!!two!!!

Well, at least nobody's saying he's worse than Hitler. Which in and of itself is unfair to Hitler because at least he made the trains run on time. Now, granted, they both gave themselves raises after having their employees die under them, and I wouldn't pee in either of their faces if their heads were on fire and...well...I don't know how to end that sentence.

I mean, seriously, all that's missing from Catoe's tenure thus far is a Medal of Freedom from former Preznit Bush.

Heckuva job.

Where the Hell have you been? We all thought you were floating face down in the Potomac...

Wow, does he have to eat a puppy on live TV in order to get fired? I fully plan to bring up in my annual review that I haven't managed to kill anybody on my watch. I'll let you know if I snag a "health and wellness" bonus.

How about he takes a $1 salary and gives the rest of it to Metro so they can improve the system.

From WUSA9: While his salary remains the same, he'll receive a $26,000 annuity when he retires. He also gets $6,000 more in healthcare coverage.

Right, because when people die in a massive and quite avoidable crash due to shitty equipment that WMATA even knew was shitty, the logical thing to do is to renew the GM's contract and increase his healthcare.

Well, if he's riding the system everyday, he's going to need that healthcare coverage sooner or later.

Agree that he should not continue as Metro GM. The only even slightly innovative improvement on his watch so far has been the replacement of the perfectly fine old white lights with the scary red lights along the platform edges. Elsewhere during his tenure, the Red Line is completely FUBAR, forever, the Orange Crush continues unabated, and the Green Line gets a train every 7 minutes if it's lucky. Bus bunching and broken escalators are STILL a problem. Pick something, anything, and fix it for good, please!

it's been said elsewhere, but it's not just catoe—we need a shake up of the board and the entire way that metro is managed. unfortunately, in risk-averse DC, that won't happen.

it sucks watching the whole system slowly fall apart...

Yeah, remember that Washington Post story about most of the board members never really taking Metro, and, on top of it, not paying their parking bill? That needs to change, pronto.

I'd bet my left breast if Catoe, his family, or any of the Board of Director's and their family were aboard the train that crashed in June this would be a non-issue.

WMATA would have done an about face so quickly and efficiently Metro would be acknowledged as one of the safest public transportation systems in our nation by now. Funny how when you or the people you care about almost get hurt or fatally injured you step up your game real quickly.

You just wrote our epitaphs. It is a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done!

holy cow that's a lot of money for a rather unsuccessful official. ill add this to the list of things that anger me about DC. I still think we should all wake up really early one morning, march to the bridges, and block Virginia commuters until some agrees to give us a vote or two in
Congress.

I don't think I would have renewed his contract--so much bad 5h1t has gone down on his watch--and there's been very little improvement that anyone could attribute to HIS efforts. I would like to know Catoe, what exactaly is it that you, DO?! He hosts online chats once a month, talks to reporters, and puts his name on press releases... but other then that, you really don't hear of him making any monumental improvements to the system.

I say it's time for new blood and fresh management--Metro needs to go back to being run by former Army sargeants like back in their starting years... Jackson Grahm was a ruthless advocate of the system and he got stuff done quickly and effectively, and regardless of his impetuousness, was probably for the best Gen Mgr WMATA will have ever had.

Personally, I think Catoe needs to go! He's had ample opportunity to prove he can turn this agency around and hasn't done much that I can see.

Oh and PS--

That man is WAAAAAY over-paid! I think that might very well be more money than the President makes--jeez! And people sit there moaning about federal managers making too much! What the heck does that screw ball need $315k a year for? If you're gonna pay him that much, make the man work for it, tie it to the performance of WMATA and see if he doesn't work a bit harder to improve the agency!
