A man was struck by a Yellow Line train at the Columbia Heights station at around 2 p.m. this afternoon, Metro officials have confirmed. Preliminary reports indicate this appears to be another suicide attempt, making this the ninth such attempt this year on the D.C. Metro system. Trains are currently stopped while rescue workers attempt to reach the man, who is under the train. More soon. UPDATE 2:27: Reader Matthew writes in to say that while traveling between Fort Totten and U Street stations just after the incident, a crowd of people got on at Columbia Heights and some of them said that they had witnessed a man jump in front of the Yellow Line train. D.C. Fire/EMS confirms rescue and treatment attempts are still ongoing, so no word yet on the man's condition. 2:39 p.m.The Columbia Heights station is now closed, according to Metro. Green Line trains are single-tracking between Georgia Ave. and U St./Cardozo, but for now they are not stopping at Columbia Heights. 3 p.m. Columbia Heights station has reopened, but trains continue to share the same track. 3:10 p.m.D.C. Fire/EMS spokesperson Pete Piringer said the person struck was a teenage male. He was removed from under the train by firefighters, treated by paramedics and transported to a local hospital with serious and life threatening injuries. 3:40 p.m. Metro is saying the teen was "fatally struck," which is the first we've heard that he died from his injuries. Columbia Heights station is now open, but Green Line trains are single tracking between Georgia Ave-Petworth and Shaw.

oy vey, how soon until we get plexiglass dividers put between the trains and the platforms?
That's just what we need. Months and months of closings and delays to install these multi-million-dollar (possibly even billion) contraptions, which in the end will just be another piece of equipment that tourists with lean upon or otherwise break, causing more delays, closings, single-tracking, etc.
Also, with all of the door opening problems (opening the wrong doors, not being in the right place on the platform, etc.), doors on the platforms would just add another layer of fail.
I vote no.
METRO should require psych screenings before people enter stations or buses.
Hey, it'd make *my* day better...
i'm not wholly opposed to that idea.
What a legacy: Being a selfish asshole who traumatized/inconvenienced a whole lot of people. Probably worth more dead than alive anyway.
classy. hope that no one you love is ever clinically depressed.
Seriously.
Congratulations, you've just been nominated for the Most Worthy of a Junkpunch award! Your fellow nominees are: Rep. Joe Wilson,Legba Carrefour,The Teabag Protestors,James von Brunn,and Molly's owners.
Who will win? Nobody knows! Stay tuned for a special viewing brought to you by this year's Biggest Douche, Kanye West!
Yo mNomeNa, I'm really happy for you, ima let you finish, but Kanye had the best Deserving a Junkpunch moment of all time, one of the best Deserving a Junkpunch moements of all time!
All I'm saying is have the common curtousy to off your ass by swandiving of a bridge at 3 in the morning, or with sleeping pills in the comfort of your home, not when I want to pick up a pie from Pete's.
I hear you. Not only did they want to off themselves, they wanted to do it in a way that caused others (probably loved ones, not anonymous you/me) pain. Angry people...
Playing *chicken*!
Who the eff plays chicken with a train!?
apparently this guy.
It should be noted that I am a big, dumb asshole who eats shit for a living.
Attention depressed residents of DC: Please keep your suicide attempts to yourself. Metro has enough problems as it is. Pills or guns are more effective and less painful.
And if you plan to use a gun, by the time you're able to legally obtain one you might have gotten the help you need!
haven't these hapless souls heard of "auto-erotic asphyxiation"? i mean, if you gonna take yourself out, take yourself OUT!
I just happened to be walking by the station a few minutes ago, just as the jumper came up the elevator on a stretcher with the rescue workers. He was covered in blood and one of the EMTs was doing the CPR chest compression thing. Have a feeling he won't live...
I am waiting for someone to ride a ghost bike onto Metro rails with an AR-15 strapped to his back with Molly on a leash while eating a Jumbo Slice.
Coming Next Summer:
Ghost Rider II: Bitch in Heat.
"someone"
if this is a cry for help, we're here for you...
"I have this... friend? And he's planning on ride a ghost bike onto Metro rails with an AR-15 strapped to his back? What do you think he should do?" Tom asked, wheeling about disarmingly.
For once, the Red line is apparently on time....everything else is delayed.

Not sure I want to see anti-suicide ads on METRO. METRO's Great Society Brutalist architecture- and the stations are our best examples of Brutalist architecute- is dehumanizing, solemn, and oppressive enough without staring at some "please don't kill yourself" ad.
downtown rez: (i don't think you need to capitalize metro. WMATA, yes, because that actually is an acronym.)
anyway, they're slowly but surely moving away from the zero adornment in the stations that was originally planned, so i wouldn't be surprised to see such notices soon...
Yeah- You can see the Ads from a million miles away, but to see the ad revenues you need a microscope.
+1
Maybe some anti suicide posters near the tracks? With a phone number to call?
I mean is the appeal of jumping infront of a train? If you survive its gonna hurt. Sounding crass...but people there are easier ways.
+1
You better hope that guy has Verizon, because I guarntee the other providers wont have service underground yet, and that may provoke the suicidal person even more. Yet another reason for the other cellphone providers to hurry up and extend their networks to metro!
They have that on the Golden Gate Bridge. Of course, a local news team did an investigation, picked up the phone, but no one answered. How depressing is that.
So, it's wrong that I audibly laughed at that, right?
Was it an extremely frustrated tea bagger?
If anyone is remotely thinking of doing this, please seek help. And while you're at it, watch "The Subway" episode of Homicide: Life on the Streets. It pretty graphically illustrates what a bad way to go death by subway is.
Oh God, I remember that episode. Not pretty.
Are we up to 3 or 4 rail deaths this week?! I've lost count *hangs head in shame*
What is it with all the suicidal depression lately?!
Are there easier ways?? Good question. Let's ask Dorothy Parker...
Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren’t lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.
No more
One Dorothy Parker quote and I'm under the table.
Two Dorothy Parker quotes and I'm under my host.
You know, as a troll I was going to post that my favorite ms. Parker quote was "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy." Turns out it is actually hers.
And the one over the weekend was 19. Sad.
WTOP is reporting that the teenager was "involved in a game of chicken with several other teenagers".
Sad.
So this is less a tragedy, and more a celebration of Natural Selection.
Please any information that you could share would be appreciated. We do not know what happened. Serveral people have told me that my son was playing chicken on the train with other members of his school, but the school and metro deny this account. My child was not depressed. He left home that morning fine as fas as I could tell. At 2:00 in the afternoon he should have been seated safely at his desk, instead I got a call from the assistant principal, stating that she needed to talk with me, at my home.She would not tell me anything, I thouht maybe there had been a fight iside the school so I hung up called the school back to find out if everything there was okay ,they told me my child was dead. All I know is that my son was/is loved,and he was not suicidal.He was bright and beautiful with a family that loved him. He wanted to be a scientist and if that failed to teach science along with art being something that he just enjoyed. He ws a 10th grader perhaps just trying to be accepted. Anyone who saw anything please reply. I also heard that he may have been pushed by one of the boys he was with, this information came from a letter we received from a student at the school.
the San Fransisco press doesnt cover suicides from the golden gate bridge because they think news coverage encourages people to use the bridge for suicide. I dont think we could do this here because of the metro delays it causes would have to be explained.
No news coverage for Metro? Well, there go 3/4 of DCist's posts...
Nah, there will still be plenty of posts about Metro death by accident, negligent homicide, and general mayhem - just not the suicides.
