'Tis the time of year that scenes reminiscent of a certain Hitchcock film become increasingly commonplace around these here parts.
DCist Flickr contributor Pianoman75 creates the impression of being perched pretty high up himself with this dizzying image of what the bird geek in us believes is a flock of migrating common grackles.

Got my trigger finger twitching till I saw that they were grackles.
Wait. There were no birds in "Frenzy." Just some maniac who strangled women with neckties. I don't see where birds played such an important role, frankly. Perhaps you should watch the film again and pay more attention to the strangulation technique, no?
Yeah, and there were a few birds in North by Northwest, but its not like they played a major role.
And they weren't even heading north by northwest! They were headed due south and it wasn't even Fall yet. That always ruined that picture for me. Pretty hard to take the rest of the film seriously after that blatant continuity error.
You sure about the direction? Then again, I wouldn't know a hawk from a handsaw.
last week, the 1500 block of L street NW was just swarming with birds. i think they were swifts or swallows (medium sized birds, i guess). the hurting they put on the SUVs parked there was quite a sight.
Probably grackles or starlings.
i'm going to go with starlings, i don't think they were big enough to be grackles.
If you care about the environment, kill a few whenever you see them.
are they one of the birds that the shakespeare aficionados brought over to central park?
I don't know, could be. They are a menace to the rest of the native bird population.
oh geez, you are right. I never heard that story. unbelievable.
i just want to savor that for a moment. maybe get it framed :)
Woah, I'm used to grackles from growing up in Texas where they hang out year round, but I didn't know they were migratory nor that they came through DC. Strange that I've never noticed them in the previous 6 years.
