Presidential Address to Close Streets Around Capitol

President Barack Obama will be addressing a joint session of Congress tonight to make his big health care speech, so the usual security perimeter around the U.S. Capitol for such events will be in effect. The president's speech is set to begin at 8 p.m., but the Capitol Square will be restricted beginning at 6 p.m. The United States Capitol Police are also advising that the following streets will be closed beginning at 6:30 p.m. until the end of the speech.

North Side of Capitol Square

* D Street NE between 2nd Street NE & Louisiana Avenue NW
* C Street NE between 2nd Street NE & Louisiana Avenue NW
* Constitution Avenue between 2nd Street NE & Louisiana Avenue NW
* Delaware Avenue between Columbus Circle & Constitution Avenue NE
* New Jersey Avenue NE between Louisiana Avenue & D Street NE
* Pennsylvania Avenue between 1st Street & 3rd Street NW
* East Capitol Street between 2nd Street & 1st Street NE/SE
* 1st Street between Columbus Circle NE & C Street SE
* 1st Street between Louisiana Avenue NW and Washington Avenue SW

South Side of Capitol Square

* Maryland Avenue SW between 1st Street & 3rd Street SW
* Independence Avenue between 2nd Street SE & Washington Avenue SW
* C Street between 1st Street SE & Washington Avenue SW
* Delaware Avenue between Washington Avenue SW & C Street SW
* New Jersey Avenue between Independence Avenue,& D Street SE
* South Capitol Street between Independence Avenue & D Street SE/SW

I don't understand all the closings. Car bombs in the US are so 80's

I know, long range missiles are in now.

Maybe they're concerned some open-carry advocates might try to push their argument, Waco-style.

really, clearly, they should be closing roads all the way to 3rd street. i mean, 1st street, that's the best you can do, capitol police? what a bunch of wimps. show us what you're made of and shut down ALL streets in a 40 block radius!

You're leaving the river crossings, National Airport, AND Union Station open? Sounds kind of risky to me.

Since I won't be able to stick to the original plan and pull donuts for 2 hours in front of the capitol... who's got a good drinking game for the speech?
