Chinatown's famed Friendship Arch got a bit of a sprucing up this summer, and today city officials gathered to formally reintroduce the landmark.
The arch had been covered by scaffolding until recently while construction finished up, so we're relieved to see the work that's been done more or less kept the structure exactly as it was. The restoration of the 23-year-old arch was performed by the original designer and architects, Alfred Liu and AEPA Architects and Engineers. Some of the work they completed includes cleaning and repainting the entire structure, replacing the center panel with marble, repairing and replacing worn out decorations, reinstalling lighting, and replacing missing roof tiles.
"The necessary work ensures the Friendship Arch, affectionately known as the 'Chinatown Arch,' will be in top repair to be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come," D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty said at the event.

Great! Now we just need some Chinese folks down there.
"It is our hope that the new renovations, including a high-pitched luring whistle audible only to Asians and those of Asian descent, will be successful in attracting more Chinamen to our city. Mayor Fenty is really just not happy with the quality of DC's current offerings of sesame chicken."
I thought it was affectionately called "Chinatown."
chinablock.
All that effort to refurbish the arch and you still can't get decent dim sum?
Forget it, boondoggle. It's Gallery Place.
I thought it was nice that the remaining five Chinese living in Chinatown could make it to the ceremony.
The rest were too busy making delicious general tso's...
Not to be confused with General Tsao's, General's Tao's, or just General Chicken.
