Dish of the Week: Peri Peri Chicken

Nando's Peri Peri offers some delicious chicken. The chain started out of South Africa, and began a northern and westward expansion. The first U.S. branch opened last year in Chinatown.

Their grilled chicken is moist with a flavor kissed with smoke from the grill. You also have a choice of sauces offering varying heats and flavors ranging from mild to x-tra x-tra hot, but I prefer the chicken naked. Without the sauce, the skin maintains a pleasing crispness, and a few of the sauces have a tendency to be overpowering.

And just a tip: the Dupont location is a little better at grilling their chicken than the Chinatown one. Still, the Chinatown location is a classier alternative to Chipotle. And be sure to get a side order of halloumi cheese, a hard grilled Greek cheese that has a flavor that reminds me of bacon.

Nando's Peri Peri is located at 819 7th Street NW and 1210 18th Street NW

Small Bites
Michelle Burger
Good Stuff Eatery has launched Michelle's Melt Burger in honor of the First Lady. The proceeds from its sale will go to DC Central Kitchen. The burger is a free range turkey burger with caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce and South Lawn Herb Garden mayo on a wheat bun. The burger joins one already on the menu for the First Lady's husband.

Taylor Gourmet Too
The second location of Taylor Gourmet will open the week of October 5, in the CityVista condo complex. Mmm... sammiches.

Scarily Hoppy
Everyone is familiar with Brew at the Zoo. For Halloween, the National Zoo will host Night of the Living Zoo on October 30, which features brews from Magic Hat. The event will also feature music from SouLive, and tickets are $25 ($15 for FONZ members).

Mooning Around
The Japan-America Society of Washington is hosting a Moon Viewing Festival at the National Arboretum on October 3 from 5:30-8 p.m. The event will feature a number of demonstrations, and bento boxes may be ordered for dinner. Sake, soft drinks, and daifuku/mochi are provided. Tickets start at $20 and go up to $40 with bento orders.

Thai To Go
Following up on our story about FoodChain DC, a Thai cart will be launching some time next week on the SW corner of 17th and M Street NW. The cart is right down the street from one of the Jerk chicken carts, making it quite a tasty street.
