The much discussed FRESHFARM Market, By the White House kicks off its first day in operation this afternoon. DDOT sent out a reminder that Vermont Ave. NW between H and I Streets will be closed from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, but keep in mind that the market itself only runs from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. – the extra time built in is for setting up and taking down the stands. The market, which is open rain or shine, will continue every Thursday afternoon through October 29. Expect the usual FRESHFARM market fair: meats, cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, flowers, and the like.

Actually, I walked by, and the street was closed off and vendors were setting up as early as 10:15. Maybe the Obamas are going to go shopping alone first? When I walked by at 11:15, there were Secret Service everywhere, large vehicles blocking much of the intersection and crosswalk, caution tape everywhere, and metal detectors at the entrance to the market, which was clearly still not set up.
Mysterious.
i heard that for the first market the farmers had to arrive at 8 or 10 or something. i hope they don't have to do this everyweek, makes for a super long day for the farmers!
a friend of mine who works at the dupont market (run by the same folks) said that the farmers were all told that today would be the only day they would have to get there early for the security sweep.
I hope that's true. Because customers having to wait in line for an hour to get through the metal detectors will get old really quick.
Secret Service and metal detectors? Yeah, that sounds like some POTUS or FLOTUS shopping going on. But I'm hoping for a visit from my secret crushes, Rahm Emanuel and Kalpen Modi...oh, and I'll buy some apples too or something.
The entrance to my building is on Vermont between H and I, and we had an email this morning saying Michelle Obama would be speaking some time between 2:45 and 3:15pm today (hence the added security).
They actually had the street blocked off this morning when I got to work around 9am.

I walked 6 blocks over there leaving my office at about 3:10. There was a line of people a block long trying to get in, metal detectors, ID checks and the entrance to McPherson metro was closed. Seriously?? Will it always be like this or is it just because of Michelle? I wish she would just stay home. Why does her desire to attend a market located on a city street mean that I get frisked? I could understand if I were attending an official event but this was not.

Ms. Obama did a great job. I am happy for Fresh Farm Market they have worked hard to get markets across the city. Hope the White House market is a success. Here is a great article on the event today.
